Louisiana State Police are seeking a man and woman from Lafayette in an investigation into child sex trafficking. Troopers say 22-year-old Darneesha Lashay Martin and 19-year-old Alcoby Con LaSalle are wanted on counts of trafficking children and promoting prostitution. The Advocate reports the investigation is ongoing. State police Tuesday asked anyone with information about their whereabouts to call 262-33-41.





THE LEESVILLE CITY COUNCIL ON MONDAY AGREED TO SEEK 250 THOUSAND DOLLARS IN FEDERAL MONEY TO PAY FOR SIDEWALKS. THE MONEY WOULD COME FROM THE SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL PROGRAM, WHICH WAS SET UP BY CONGRESS IN SEPTEMBER OF LAST YEAR TO HELP AROUND 15 THOUSAND SCHOOLS. CITY ADMINISTRATOR COURTNEY CHRISTIAN SAYS THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL DETERMINED THAT WALKABLE STREETS WOULD IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR RESIDENTS. IF APPROVED, THE SIDEWALKS WOULD START AT VERNON ELEMENTARY AND END AT WEST LEESVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

After years of shrinking trooper ranks, Louisiana is planning to train a new class of state police officers early next year. Budget constraints kept the state police from adding new troopers. But lawmakers earmarked a $5 million set-aside fund for the training in the last legislative session, saying they worried that too few officers were patrolling state highways. The 19-week training academy for 50 people is scheduled to begin in January.





TWO GROUPS, APPROVED BY THE STATE TO OPEN CHARTER SCHOOLS IN LAFAYETTE PARISH, SAY THEY ARE ON TRACK TO HAVE THREE SCHOOLS READY TO GO BY THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR. MARY LOUELLA COOK OF THE LAFAYETTE CHARTER FOUNDATION TELLS THE ADVOCATE THAT CONTRACTS SHOULD BE IN HAND BY EARLY DECEMBER FOR TWO KINDERGARTEN THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE SCHOOLS. ONE OF THE SCHOOLS WILL BE BUILT IN SUGAR MILL POND IN YOUNGSVILLE AND THE OTHER WILL BE IN NORTH LAFAYETTE AT A NEW DEVELOPMENT CALLED COURET PLACE. JAY MILLER OF THE LOUISIANA ACHIEVEMENT CHARTER ACADEMY, WHICH ALSO PLANS TO OPERATE A KINDERGARTEN THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE SCHOOL AT THE BEGINNING OF NEXT YEAR, SAYS THEY ARE IN NEGOTIATIONS FOR TWO PROPERTIES.





THE CITY OF LAKE CHARLES IS BEGINNING THE PROCESS OF GETTING TWO TAX RENEWALS ON THE BALLOT IN MAY, EVEN THOUGH THEY EXPIRE IN 2015. MAYOR RANDY ROACH SAYS THAT THEY WANT THE ELECTION TO TAKE PLACE IN MAY IN CASE THEY GET VOTED DOWN, SO THERE’S A SECOND OPPORTUNITY TO GET THEM PASSED BEFORE THE EXPIRATION. ONE OF THE TAXES IS A 25 YEAR, ONE CENT SALES TAX THAT GENERATES ABOUT 21 MILLION DOLLARS, AND THE OTHER IS A TEN YEAR, QUARTER CENT SALES TAX WHICH BRINGS IN JUST OVER FIVE MILLION DOLLARS. NEXT WEEK, THE CITY COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER SCHEDULING A SPECIAL JANUARY SEVENTH MEETING TO CALL FOR THE MAY ELECTION.





A LONG TIME FURNITURE STORE IN OPELOUSAS IS CLOSING. JOE SMITH, WHO OWN’S JOE SMITH’S FURNITURE, TELLS THE ADVERTISER THAT AFTER 55 YEARS OF SELLING FURNITURE, IT’S TIME TO GET OUT. HE SAYS HE’LL CONTINUE OPERATING THE STORE UNTIL A LIQUIDATION SALE CLEARS OUT HIS WAREHOUSES. SMITH OWNS THE BUILDING, LOCATED OFF OF I-49, AND SAYS HE’LL CONSIDER LEASING IT ONCE HE’S CLOSED.





A 39-year-old Morgan City man suspected of kidnapping and raping a 41-year-old Iberville Parish woman in 1994 was arrested and booked after his DNA matched evidence from the crime. Sheriff Brett Stassi tells The Advocate Bernie Metrejean was linked to the nearly 20-year-old crime after he was arrested in St. Mary Parish on drug charges. Stassi said investigators believe Metrejean allegedly abducted and raped the woman, who is now 60 years old, on Nov. 15, 1994 while she was walking up the street to a neighborhood store. Metrejean was booked into the Iberville Parish Jail on Monday night for aggravated rape and aggravated kidnapping.
