The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says it has received word that a federal permit won't be needed any longer on two wildlife management areas on Army land in the Leesville area. Louisiana hunting licenses will still be needed to hunt on the Fort Polk and Peason Ridge WMAs. That includes a $15 annual permit to hunt in state wildlife management areas. Fort Polk and Peason Ridge WMAs provide more than 138,000 acres for public outdoor recreation.





Louisiana's Department of Health and Hospitals reports three new West Nile virus cases, all of them flu-like West Nile fever. A news release Friday said the diagnoses, including one in Lafayette parish, brings the year's total to 58 cases.

While most people never have any symptoms, about 10 percent get West Nile fever and some get infections of the brain or spinal cord, which can lead to brain damage, paralysis and death. Louisiana has had 34 such neuroinvasive cases, four of them fatal.

A year ago, lawyers for BP and Gulf Coast residents and businesses took turns urging a federal judge to approve their settlement for compensating victims of the company's massive 2010 oil spill. On Monday, the one-time allies will be at odds. Several months after U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier approved the deal, BP started complaining that the judge and court-appointed claims administrator misinterpreted the settlement. BP is worried it could be forced to pay billions of dollars for bogus or inflated claims by businesses.

THE LAFAYETTE CITY PARISH COUNCIL TOMORROW NIGHT WILL VOTE AGAIN ON TRANSFERRING CONTROL OF FOSTER PARK TO THE CITY OF YOUNGSVILLE. THE COUNCIL LAST MONTH REJECTED THE TRANSFER BECAUSE OF CONCERNS THAT YOUNGSVILLE WAS NOT REQUIRED TO KEEP THE PROPERTY AS A PARK AND WHETHER THE BROUSSARD YOUNGSVILLE YOUTH ASSOCIATION COULD CONTINUE TO PLAY BALLGAMES THERE. YOUNGSVILLE MAYOR WILSON VIATOR SAYS THE PROPOSAL HAS BEEN REVISED TO ADDRESS THOSE CONCERNS BUT HES BEEN TOLD THERE ARE STILL NOT ENOUGH VOTES FOR PASSAGE. VIATOR IS PUSHING FOR THE TRANSFER SO THAT A PORTION OF THE PARK CAN BE USED AS PLAYGROUNDS AND PARKING FOR GREEN T. LINDON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AFTER IT IS EXPANDED.





AN INVESTIGATION OF A HIT-AND-RUN THAT RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF A PEDESTRIAN LED STATE POLICE TO ARREST A MAMOU MAN. 30-YEAR-OLD JOHNATON BEN OF MAMOU WAS WALKING ALONG L-A 104 IN THE AFTERNOON OF OCTOBER 19TH WHEN HE WAS STRUCK FROM BEHIND BY A 2009 DODGE RAM TRUCK. STATE POLICE TROOPER STEPHEN HAMMONS SAYS THEY ARRESTED 32-YEAR-OLD KENNETH ROMERO THURSDAY NIGHT AND BOOKED HIM INTO THE EVANGELINE PARISH JAIL. HE HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH VEHICULAR HOMOCIDE AND FELONY HIT-AND-RUN.





A new audit says Louisiana paid nearly $1.9 million last year through the state's privatized Medicaid programs for 1,727 people who had died. Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera's office released the audit Monday, looking at fees that the state Department of Health and Hospitals paid in the 2012-13 budget year for privatized Medicaid medical and behavioral health services. Purpera's office compared payments DHH made to the programs to lists of the deceased obtained through DHH's vital records office. DHH says it will seek repayment from the companies by March 31.
