The National Weather Service says there could be flooding along the Calcasieu River as a weekend deluge runs off. The American Press reports that a band of storms dumped 7 to 15 inches of rain Friday and Saturday in parts of Cameron, Calcasieu, Beauregard and Allen parishes. Weather service meteorologist Joe Rua says flash floods got into at least a few homes in the Gillis and Moss Bluff areas north of Lake Charles. The weather service says Moss Bluff got more than 14 inches of rain over Friday and Saturday.





Ernest J. Gaines, writer-in-residence emeritus at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, will read from two works in progress at the university's Ernest J. Gaines Center. The event will begin at 3 p.m. Sept. 25 on the third floor of the Edith Garland Dupre Library on campus. Gaines wrote nine books of fiction, including The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, A Gathering of Old Men, and A Lesson Before Dying. The event is free and open to the public.





RICE FARMERS WERE CONCERNED THAT WET, COOL CONDITIONS THIS PAST SPRING WOULD HARM THIS YEARíS CROPS, BUT IDEAL SUMMER CONDITIONS HAVE RESULTED IN A NEAR RECORD CROP. STEVE LINSCOMBE OF THE L-S-U RICE RESEARCH STATION IN RAYNE SAYS THE AVERAGE YIELD MAY BE ABOUT 65-HUNDRED POUNDS PER ACRE, WITHIN A HUNDRED POUNDS OF THE RECORD. THE QUALITY OF THE CROP WAS VERY GOOD AS WELL. LINSCOMBE TELLS THE DAILY ADVERTISER THATíS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT COULD OPEN UP NEW EXPORT MARKETS, WHERE QUALITY IS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.





Shrimp processors have lost a call for higher duties on frozen shrimp imported from five countries ó China, Vietnam, Ecuador, India and Malaysia. The U.S. International Trade Commission rejected the proposal 4-2 Friday, saying the Coalition of Gulf Shrimp Industries failed to present strong evidence that the imports were seriously damaging the processors. A tie would have required the higher tariff. Coalition attorneys say the group will decide whether to appeal after the commission files a report explaining its ruling.





HEAD START SCHOOL OFFICIALS IN BEAUREGARD PARISH HELD AN EVENT IN DERIDDER THIS PAST FRIDAY WITH THE GOAL OF ENCOURAGING FATHERS TO BE MORE INVOLVED IN THEIR CHILDRENíS LIVES. BEAUCARE HEAD START HELD A FATHERHOOD FOOTBALL FRIDAY, WITH GAMES, FOOD AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES. HEAD START DIRECTOR RENE NICHOLS COODY TOLD THE AMERICAN PRESS THAT, WHILE MOTHERS WILL HELP OUT IN THE CLASSROOM, ITíS RARE FOR DADS TO GET INVOLVED. ACCORDING TO BEAUCARE OFFICIALS, CHILDREN WITH ACTIVE DADS ARE MORE LIKELY TO SUCCEED ACADEMICALLY AND HAVE HIGHER SELF-ESTEEM.







State health regulators this past week have confirmed five new West Nile virus cases. The Department of Health and Hospitals said Friday the new cases bring this year's total to 39. Two of the new cases were in Lafayette parish, one a neuroinvasive case and the other was asymptomatic. Dr. Raoult Ratard, the state epidemiologist, recommends taking precautions against mosquitoes.





THE WASHINGTON CITY COUNCIL REJECTED A PROPOSED ORDINANCE THAT WOULD HAVE ALLOWED THEM TO DEAL WITH UNKEMPT, DANGEROUS OR BLIGHTED STRUCTURES WITHIN THE TOWN LIMITS. THE ORDINANCE WOULD HAVE ALLOWED THE CITY TO SEIZE BLIGHTED PROPERTIES IF THE OWNERS DO NOT CLEAN OR REPAIR THEM. TOWN ATTORNEY CHAD PITRE SAYS THE ORDINANCE WAS WELL-PREPARED AND SAFE. BUT MAYOR JOE PITRE ISNíT SO SURE, TELLING THE ADVOCATE THAT HE WANTED ASSURANCES THE ORDINANCE WAS LEGALLY SOUND AND DID NOT CONFLICT WITH OTHER ORDINANCES, SUCH AS HISTORIC DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS.
