A 54-year-old Welsh man that collapsed in the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail has died.

The sheriff's office tells the American Press that Lou Allen Griffin died at 6 a.m. Thursday at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. Griffin collapsed at around 7 p.m. Wednesday. Griffin was in jail on charges of criminal damage to property and aggravated simple arson.





LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS HAVE ARRESTED THREE PEOPLE ALLEGEDLY INVOLVED IN A BURGLARY RING THAT TARGETED RURAL HOMES IN LAFAYETTE, ACADIA, AND VERMILLION PARISHES OVER THE LAST TWO MONTHS. ACADIA PARISH SHERIFF WAYNE MELANCON SAYS ON WEDNESDAY A MAN DRIVING HOME SPOTTED WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS A BURGLARY IN PROGRESS AND HE REPORTED THE LICENSE PLATE AND DESCRIPTION OF THE VEHICLE TO THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE. AS A RESULT, TWO MEN WERE ARRESTED IN THE BURGLARIES, 29-YEAR-OLD DAMIEN SCHEXNAYDER OF RAYNE AND 35-YEAR-OLD JEROME THIBODEAUX OF MAURICE. A THIRD MAN, 53-YEAR-OLD JACK LEBLANC OF SCOTT WAS ARRESTED FOR BUYING THE STOLEN GOODS.





THE WOMAN THAT DIED IN A HOMOCIDE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON IN ACADIA PARISH HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED. JULIE DARCY REPORTS.





A federal judge says he expects the second phase of a trial over BP's 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to last 16 days. An order issued Thursday by U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier said the second phase will be tried in two parts. The first part, which starts Sept. 30, will explore BP's efforts to stop the flow of oil that gushed from its blown-out Macondo well. The second part, lasting 12 days, is designed to determine how much oil spilled into the Gulf before the well was capped.





18 PEOPLE WHO WERE ARRESTED LAST MONTH IN A LAW ENFORCEMENT INVESTIGATION KNOWN AS “OPERATION HAVANA SPEED” WERE INDICTED YESTERDAY. THE ONE-AND-A-HALF YEAR LONG INVESTIGATION LED TO THE ARRESTS OF MORE THAN TWENTY PEOPLE WHO WERE ALLEGEDLY INVOLVED IN A LAB-QUALITY CRYSTAL METH DRUG RING. MOST WERE FROM THE STARKS AND VINTON AREAS AND HAD TIES TO HORSE RACING. ONE OF THE ALLEGED RINGLEADERS, FIFTY-YEAR-OLD LAZARO PEREZ CRIBEIRO, WAS INDICTED ON SEVEN COUNTS OF METH DISTRIBUTION WHILE THE OTHER SEVENTEEN RECEIVED ATTEMPTED METH DISTRIBUTION INDICTMENTS.







LAFAYETTE POLICE HAVE ARRESTED A 15-YEAR-OLD FOR SHOOTING A PINEVILLE WOMAN ON SUNDAY AND HE’S BEING CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER. 51-YEAR-OLD CONNIE BURCH, WHO DIED FROM A SINGLE GUNSHOT WOUND, WAS FOUND AROUND ONE A-M SUNDAY NEAR A COULEE BRIDGE ON MADELINE AVENUE. CORPORAL PAUL MOUTON SAYS THEY BELIEVE THE TWO WERE ACQUAINTED WITH EACH OTHER, BUT THEY HAVE NOT FOUND A MOTIVE IN THE SHOOTING. DETECTIVES HAVE INTERVIEWED BURCH’S FAMILY TO TRY TO FIND OUT WHY SHE WAS IN LAFAYETTE WHEN THE SHOOTING OCCURRED.





A GROUP FROM ST. LANDRY PARISH IS GOING TO WASHINGTON D-C THIS WEEKEND TO TAKE PART IN THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON AND MARTIN LUTHER KING’S FAMOUS “I HAVE A DREAM” SPEECH. THEY INCLUDE TWO EUNICE RESIDENTS WHO WERE THERE IN 1963: CLIFTON LEMELLE AND DOUGLAS BELLARD. MORE THAN 200 THOUSAND WERE INVOLVED IN THE ORIGINAL MARCH, AND ABOUT ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THIS WEEKEND’S REMEMBRANCE. 32-YEAR-OLD RICKY JULIEN OF OPELOUSAS, WHO IS BRINGING HIS FAMILY, TELLS THE DAILY ADVERTISER THAT, AS THE ORIGINAL MARCH IGNITED A FLAME, HE HOPES IT WILL DO THE SAME FOR HIS TWO CHILDREN.





U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander is planning to endorse state Sen. Neil Riser's bid to fill the 5th congressional district seat that he is vacating next month. Jamie Hanks, Alexander's press secretary, confirmed Thursday that he will soon back Riser's campaign. Alexander's resignation is effective Sept. 26. Hanks did not provide any further details of the congressman's plans.
