A 22-year-old Lafayette man has been arrested after allegedly spanking a 3-year-old boy too hard. Carencro police arrested Brandon J. Sayrie on one count of cruelty to juveniles following a complaint from the victim's mother. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Daily Advertiser detectives met with the victim and mother at Women's and Children's Hospital where they learned that the mother discovered "several marks on the buttocks, front pelvic area and private area of the juvenile." The affidavit states that the marks were believed to be made by a belt.

A MAURICE MAN HAS ADMITTED TO MAKING COUNTERFEIT ONE HUNDRED DOLLAR BILLS. 31-YEAR-OLD BRANDON LEE LANDRY PLED GUILTY BEFORE U-S DISTRICT JUDGE RICHARD HAIK. WHEN LANDRY WAS ARRESTED LAST SEPTEMBER, OFFICERS FOUND HIGH QUALITY COUNTERFEIT BILLS AND THE EQUIPMENT TO MAKE THEM. LANDRY COULD RECEIVE UP TO TWENTY YEARS IN PRISON, A 250 THOUSAND DOLLAR FINE AND FIVE YEARS OF SUPERVISED RELEASE.

THE LAFAYETTE POLICE CHIEF SAYS HIS DEPARTMENT IS STRUGGLING TO HIRE AND KEEP OFFICERS. POLICE CHIEF JIM CRAFT AND FIRE CHIEF ROBERT BENOIT GAVE A REVIEW OF THEIR DEPARTMENTS TO THE LAFAYETTE CITY PARISH COUNCIL YESTERDAY. CRAFT SAYS PART OF THE PROBLEM IN KEEPING EMPLOYEES IS THE BOOMING OIL INDUSTRY, WHICH IS OFFERING GOOD STARTING SALARIES. CRAFT AND BENOIT SAID THEY WILL BE ABLE TO WORK WITH THIS YEAR’S ALLOCATIONS, BUT WARNED THE COUNCIL THEY NEED TO INVEST MORE INTO PUBLIC SAFETY.







CALCASIEU PARISH POLICE JURORS YESTERDAY HEARD DETAILS ABOUT A 150 MILLION DOLLAR SEWAGE EXPANSION PLAN. THE AREAS WHERE THE SEWERAGE WOULD BE EXPANDED IS IN SOUTH LAKE CHARLES, IOWA, VINTON DEQUINCEY, CARLYSS, MOSS BLUFF, WESTLAKE AND IN NORTH SULPHUR. PART OF THE COST WOULD BE COVERED BY A HALF CENT SALES TAX IN THE UNINCORPORATED PARTS OF THE PARISH, AND THE REST OF THE FUNDS WILL COME FROM GAMBLING MONEY AND STATE GRANTS. THE PLAN CALLS FOR THE CREATION OF A SEWAGE COMMISSION WHICH WILL CONTRACT WITH THE PARISH TO DO THE CONSTRUCTION.





THE CROWLEY POLICE DEPARTMENT IS ASKING THE PUBLIC’S HELP IN FINDING PAUL ALEX GRIFFIN SENIOR OF RAYNE. THE 38-YEAR-OLD GRIFFIN IS WANTED ON A CHARGE OF CARNAL KNOWLEDGE OF A JUVENILE. GRIFFIN IS WHITE, FIVE-EIGHT, 190 POUNDS, BALD, AND WITH A FULL BEARD. ANYONE WITH KNOWLEDGE OF HIS WHEREABOUTS IS ASKED TO CALL 789-TIPS.





The Louisiana Legislature will pay at least $40,000 over the next few weeks for 19 lawmakers to travel to different conferences and gather with colleagues from other states. First up is the Southern Legislative Conference in Mobile, Ala., which started Saturday and ends Wednesday. Next is the American Legislative Exchange Council on Aug. 7-9 in Boston, followed by the National Conference of State Legislatures meeting on Aug. 12-15 in Atlanta. The Advocate reports that conference registration, travel and hotel costs for the legislators will total about $28,000, according to information provided by the state House and Senate.
