THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL SYSTEM COULD SEE MORE SUSPENSIONS AND EXPULSIONS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR AS STUDENTS GET USED TO A NEW, STRICTER DISCIPLINE POLICY. THE SCHOOL BOARD APPROVED THE NEW POLICY AT THEIR JULY 17TH MEETING. IT CALLS FOR MORE IMMEDIATE CONSEQUENCES FOR MISBEHAVIOR. THE POLICY WAS REVISED BASED ON COMPLAINTS BY TEACHERS THAT A STUDENT WOULD HAVE TO GO TO THE FRONT OFFICE TOO MANY TIMES BEFORE RECEIVING A MEANINGFUL PUNISHMENT.





THE CALCASIEU PARISH SCHOOL SYSTEM BEGAN A THREE DAY LEADERSHIP SUMMIT IN LAKE CHARLES FOR THE PARISH’S MORE THAN THREE HUNDRED ADMINISTRATORS. RON CLARK, WHO RUNS A PRIVATE ACADEMY IN ATLANTA, TOLD THOSE IN ATTENDANCE THAT TEACHERS NEED TO FEEL RESPECTED AND HAVE A VOICE. CLARK SAYS EMPOWERED TEACHERS ARE HAPPIER AND GET BETTER RESULTS. THE SUMMIT, WHICH GOES THROUGH TOMORROW, WILL HAVE SESSIONS ON IMPLEMENTING THE NEW COMMON CORE STANDARDS, WHICH THE STATE LEGISLATURE APPROVED BEGINNING IN THE 2014-15 SCHOOL YEAR.





TWO ST. MARY PARISH SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES WHO WERE SHOT IN THE LINE OF DUTY LAST JANUARY HAVE BEEN GIVEN NEW PROTECTIVE VESTS. REPRESENTATIVES OF SAFARILAND AND BARNEY’S POLICE SUPPLIES RECENTLY VISITED THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO PRESENT THE NEW BODY ARMOR TO DETECTIVES JASON JAVIER AND MATTHEW STRICKLAND. THE TWO WERE SHOT AFTER RESPONDING TO AN EMERGENCY CALL IN CHARENTON. A CHITIMACHA POLICE OFFICER SERGEANT RICK RIGGENBACH WAS SHOT AND KILLED IN THE SAME INCIDENT.

A NEW APARTMENT COMPLEX THAT WILL HOUSE STUDENTS AT U-L LAFAYETTE MAY NOT BE FINISHED BY THE TIME CLASSES BEGIN ON AUGUST 26TH. CONSTRUCTION ON THE COTTAGE LANDING COMPLEX, A 47-UNIT APARTMENT BUILDING, BEGAN IN THE SPRING. OWNER JOEL HARBER SAID EARLIER THIS MONTH THAT THEY WOULD BE READY FOR THE FIRST WAVE OF STUDENTS BY SATURDAY, BUT EARTH-MOVING EQUIPMENT WAS STILL ON THE GROUNDS AS OF YESTERDAY. UNIVERSITY MEDIA RELATIONS SPECIALIST CHARLIE BIER TOLD THE DAILY ADVERTISER THEY MAY BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE SOME OF THE STUDENTS IN DORM ROOMS IF THE COMPLEX IS NOT READY IN TIME.





THE F-B-I CONDUCTED A THREE DAY NATIONWIDE OPERATION IN 76 CITIES THAT RESULTED IN THE RECOVERY OF 105 CHILDREN WHO WERE FORCED INTO PROSTITUTION. FIVE CITIES IN LOUISIANA WERE INCLUDED AND, AS A RESULT, 64 PROSTITUTES AND SIX PIMPS WERE ARRESTED IN THE STATE, ACCORDING TO MARY BETH ROMIG OF THE F-B-I OFFICE IN NEW ORLEANS. THE CITY WITH THE MOST ARRESTS WAS BATON ROUGE WITH 22. IN LAKE CHARLES, EIGHT PROSTITUTES AND TWO PIMPS WERE ARRESTED.



THE OPELOUSAS BOARD OF ALDERMEN VOTED 3-TO-2 TO ALLOW THE OLYMPIA INVESTMENT PARTNERSHIP TO PURCHASE A NINE ACRE TRACT ALONG CHERRY STREET FROM THE CITY FOR 250 THOUSAND DOLLARS. THE COMPANY PLANS ON BUILDING 30 SINGLE FAMILY HOMES ON THE PROPERTY. THE OPELOUSAS DIRECTOR OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT JOHN LAMKE TOLD THE BOARD THEY HAD TO ACT RIGHT AWAY IN ORDER FOR THE COMPANY TO QUALIFY FOR GRANTS TO HELP FUND THE PROJECT. THE PROPERTY IS NEXT TO DONATED LAND SET ASIDE FOR A PLANNED SPORTS COMPLEX.





State police are investigating an early morning accident that claimed the life of a Kaplan man. Trooper Jared Sandifer says Jeremy Little was walking in the southbound lanes of La. Highway 700 around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday when he was struck by a pickup. Sandifer said Little was wearing dark clothing, and there were no street lights in the area where the accident occurred. The driver of the truck was not injured.
