A Westlake refinery is holding a public meeting this week about its proposal to sink a sheet metal barrier into the ground to keep chemicals out of Bayou Verdine.

The Axiall Corp. refinery has been using wells to pump chlorinated hydrocarbons away from the bayou. It has asked the state for permission to change that to a permanent groundwater barrier along its north dock next to the bayou. Bill Goulet, Eagle's remediation specialist, tells the American Press that the wells are nearly 25 years old and failing. He says a barrier wall is a more modern and reliable system.





JURY SELECTION BEGINS TODAY IN THE TRIAL OF WADE LOHSE, WHO HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH VEHICULAR HOMOCIDE. IN JUNE OF 2012, LOHSE WAS ALLEGEDLY IMPAIRED WHEN HE CROSSED THE CENTER LINE OF THE YOUNGSVILLE HIGHWAY AND HIT ANOTHER CAR, KILLING THE DRIVER, 29-YEAR-OLD CASIE BARRAS MCGREW. ON MARCH 25TH, LOHSE WALKED OUT OF THE LAFAYETTE PARISH COURTHOUSE AND FLED. HE WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON APRIL 16TH OUTSIDE A PHILADELPHIA BAR.





ST. LANDRY PARISH SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER QUINCY RICHARD SENIOR IS ASKING A JUDGE TO DISMISS FEDERAL BRIBERY CHARGES AGAINST HIM. RICHARD IS ACCUSED OF SOLICITING A FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR BRIBE FROM A SUPERINTENDENT CANDIDATE IN EXCHANGE FOR HIS VOTE. HE ARGUES THAT FEDERAL PROSECUTORS HAVE NO AUTHORITY IN THE CASE BECAUSE IT INVOLVES A PARISH SCHOOL JOB. THIS IS THE SECOND ATTEMPT BY RICHARD TO HAVE THE CHARGES DISMISSED. JUDGE RICHARD HAIK DENIED AN EARLIER REQUEST.





THE CITY OF SULPHUR IS GOING PAPERLESS FOR CITY COUNCIL AND LAND USE COMMISSION MEETINGS. THE CITY SPENT THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM THE ADMINISTRATIVE BUDGET TO PURCHASE SIX DELL LATITUDE TEN TABLETS THAT WILL BE USED FOR MEETINGS ONLY. MAYOR CHRIS DUNCAN SAYS THE TABLETS WILL HAVE THE MEETING AGENDA, RESOLUTIONS AND ORDINANCES ON THEM, REPLACING MORE THAN A DOZEN BINDERS THAT EACH CONTAINED A REAM OF PAPER. DUNCAN TELLS THE AMERICAN PRESS THAT THEY ARE BIG INTO RECYCLING AND THIS IS ANOTHER INITIATIVE BY THE CITY TO GO GREEN.





THIRTEEN MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS FROM LAFAYETTE, IBERIA AND VERMILLION PARISHES HAVE TAKEN PART IN A PROGRAM THIS SUMMER AT U-L LAFAYETTE THAT IS DESIGNED TO HELP THEM BECOME MATHEMATICIAN MASTERS. U-L RECEIVED A ONE-POINT-8 MILLION DOLLAR GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION FOR THE PROGRAM. PETER SHEPHARD, THE INTERIM HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION AT

U-L, SAYS HE BELIEVES THE TEACHERS IN THE PROGRAM WILL HELP MOVE STUDENTS FROM GOOD TO GREAT IN MATH. ANOTHER SEVEN MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS WILL BE ADDED TO THE PROGRAM NEXT YEAR.





INVESTIGATORS IN VILLE PLATTE ARE TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT CAUSED A FIRE AT LOCAL RESTAURANT, WHICH BURNED TO THE GROUND. JULIE DARCY HAS MORE.





State police say a weekend accident in St. Landry Parish killed a pedestrian. Troopers say shortly before midnight Saturday, a person in dark clothing was walking along Louisiana Highway 358. A Ford truck driven by an Opelousas woman struck the person from behind. There was no word on charges as of this morning and the identity of the pedestrian had not been released.





A Crowley man has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison for robbing a post office in Natchitoches Parish. U.S. District Judge Dee Drell also on Wednesday sentenced 44-year-old Ricky J. Scott to three years of supervised release following his 90-month prison term. Scott pleaded guilty to a robbery charge in January. Federal prosecutors say Scott entered the post office in August 2012 and demanded money from the only postal worker who was in the building.
