THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD PASSED A RESOLUTION IN A VOTE OF 5-TO-4 CALLING FOR AN INVESTIGATION INTO SUPERINTENDENT DR. PAT COOPER’S JOB PERFORMANCE. JULIE DARCY REPORTS.

DOCUMENTS WERE SIGNED YESTERDAY THAT WILL ALLOW MARDI GRAS BOARDWALK TO BEGIN DEVELOPING THE OLD HARRAH’S PROPERTY IN DOWNTOWN LAKE CHARLES. MARDI GRAS BOARDWALK WANTS TO BUILD A 30 MILLION DOLLARS MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT WHICH WILL INCLUDE RESTAURANTS, RETAIL SHOPS, AN AMPHITHEATRE, CONDOMINIUMS AND MORE. THEIR NEXT STEP IS TO PUT TOGETHER A PROJECT PLAN AND, ONCE THAT’S APPROVED, THEY CAN BEGIN CONSTRUCTION. LAKE CHARLES CITY COUNCILMAN DANA CARL JACKSON TELLS K-P-L-C THAT THE COMPANY IS EXPECTING THEY’LL BEGIN TURNING DIRT WITHIN SIX MONTHS.

ST. LANDRY PARISH PRESIDENT BILL FONTENOT HAS ORDERED PARISHWIDE WEED SPRAYING TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK EVEN THOUGH THE COUNCIL LAST WEEK VOTED TO REBID THE CONTRACT. FONTENOT SAYS SPRAYING HASN’T BEEN DONE FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS AND IT HAS BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE. HE TOLD THE COUNCIL THAT THEY CAN TAKE HIM TO COURT ON THE MATTER BUT HE’S SURE HE WOULD WIN. THE COUNCIL LAST NIGHT VOTED 7-TO-4 AGAINST TAKING ACTION ON THE WEED SPRAYING, WHICH MEANS FONTENOT’S ORDER TO SPRAY NEXT WEEK STANDS.

A voting rights group says thousands of poor Louisianians have registered to vote because of its pressure on state public assistance agencies to provide the applications. The nonprofit organization Project Vote says more than 29,000 people applied to vote in 2011 and 2012 through sites that offer registration for food stamps, Medicaid and other services. That's up from 6,000 applications in 2009 and 2010. The group credits a successful federal lawsuit against state agencies for the increase.

MORE THAN A HUNDRED PEOPLE ATTENDED A VIGIL AT U-L LAFAYETTE FOR TRAYVON MARTIN, WHO WAS KILLED BY GEORGE ZIMMERMAN IN FLORIDA. A JURY ON SATURDAY DETERMINED THAT ZIMMERMAN ACTED IN SELF DEFENSE. BEFORE THE VIGIL, ABOUT A HUNDRED PEOPLE GATHERED AT MOODY HALL ON THE U-L CAMPUS TO HEAR A PANEL OF FOUR EXPERTS TALK ABOUT THE TRIAL. ONE OF THE EXPERTS, ATTORNEY TRENT GARRET, SAID HE THINKS THE JURORS WANTED TO FIND ZIIMMERMAN GUILTY OF SOMETHING, BUT THEY COULDN’T BECAUSE THE LAW AND THE EVIDENCE PRESENTED DID NOT ALLOW THEM TO DO SO.

AS OF LAST NIGHT, VERNON PARISH AUTHORITIES WERE STILL SEARCHING FOR AN ESCAPED INMATE WHO WALKED AWAY FROM A JOB SITE MONDAY MORNING. TOBIAS WILLIAMS IS A BLACK MALE, FIVE FEET NINE INCHES AND WEIGHING 165 POUNDS. HE WAS A WORK RELEASE INMATE. ANYONE WITH KNOWLEDGE OF WILLIAM’S WHEREABOUTS IS ASKED TO CALL THE VERNON PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE AT 238-13-11, OR CONTACT YOUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICE.

REVEREND LARRY GUIDRY SAYS THE CHURCH HAS BEEN HIT BY VANDALS A COUPLE OF OTHER TIMES IN THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS. HE TOLD THE CROWLEY POST SIGNAL THAT KIDS ARE DOING THINGS THESE DAYS THAT HE NEVER THOUGHT HE’D SEE, BUT HE IS PRAYING FOR THE VANDALS.

The number of Louisiana public school students taking the ACT college admissions test has jumped by roughly 11,000, now that the state requires high school students to take the exam — and the number scoring high enough to attend college without remedial work jumped by 3,600 this year. Louisiana's Department of Education says students with ACT scores of 18 or higher can attend four-year and two-year colleges without taking remedial courses. Last year, more than 18,000 seniors scored 18 or higher out of nearly 26,000 with ACT scores. This year, nearly 22,000 posted an 18 or higher out of approximately 37,000 tested.
