TONIGHT THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD WILL CONSIDER GIVING SUPERINTENDENT PAT COOPER A LETTER OF REPRIMAND BECAUSE OF HIS REFUSAL TO FIRE SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE SUPERINTENDENT THAD WELCH. LAST MONTH, THE BOARD VOTED TO DEFUND WELCH’S POSITION BECAUSE HE DOES NOT HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, BUT COOPER SAID HE’D FIND OTHER FUNDING SOURCES TO CONTINUE PAYING WELCH. COOPER SAYS HE BELIEVES THE LETTER OF REPRIMAND IS THE FIRST STEP IN FIRING HIM. BOARD MEMBER GREG AWBREY SAYS THEY ARE NOT FIRING COOPER AND HE HOPES THE LETTER OF REPRIMAND WILL RESOLVE THE MATTER.





THE CALCASIEU AREA COUNCIL OF THE BOY SCOUTS MAY LOSE FUNDING FROM THE UNITED WAY OF SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA. DENISE DUREL OF THE UNITED WAY SAYS THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR THAT THEY ARE TARGETING THE AT-RISK POPULATION. SHE SAYS THAT THE BOY SCOUTS PROPOSAL DID NOT DO THAT. THE BOY SCOUTS CAN RESUBMIT ANOTHER PROPOSAL BY FRIDAY, BUT IT MUST ADEQUATELY ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF THE AT-RISK POPULATION. THE CALCASIEU AREA COUNCIL BOY SCOUTS GETS 19 PERCENT OF THEIR ANNUAL BUDGET FROM THE UNITED WAY.





AN OPELOUSAS MAN HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED SECOND DEGREE MURDER AND BOOKED INTO THE ST. LANDRY PARISH JAIL. 18-YEAR-OLD PETER JONES IS ACCUSED OF STABBING SOMEONE JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT LAST WEDNESDAY. SHERIFF BOBBY GUIDROZ SAYS SEVERAL WITNESSES, INCLUDING THE VICTIM, IDENTIFIED JONES AS THE SUSPECT IN THE STABBING. HE IS CURRENTLY BEING HELD ON A 150 THOUSAND DOLLAR BOND.





The company whose nearly $200 million Medicaid contract with the state has been cancelled says it didn't do anything improper to get the work. CNSI sent a letter to the state Department of Health and Hospitals this week objecting to the contract termination. Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration scrapped the contract after details leaked about a federal investigation into the contract award. CNSI attorney Kathryn Harris wrote to DHH seeking to discuss the contract, saying the state hasn't provided any factual basis for the cancellation.





LAST NIGHT THE LAFAYETTE CITY PARISH COUNCIL AGREED TO TRANSFER 367 THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM A CAPITAL FUND TO HELP PAY FOR A NEW FIRE STATION. CITY PARISH OFFICIALS ARE HOPEFUL THEY CAN TAKE BIDS FOR CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW STATION BEFORE JUNE AND CONSTRUCTION IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE END OF NEXT YEAR.. THE NEW FIRE STATION WILL BE BUILT ON PROPERTY BOUGHT BY THE CITY PARISH GOVERNMENT ON CURRAN LANE, BETWEEN AMBASSADOR CAFFERY AND SOUTH DOMINGUE ROAD. THE NEW FIRE STATION WAS NEEDED TO KEEP LAFAYETTE’S FIRE RATING FROM DROPPING AND RESULTING IN INCREASED PROPERTY INSURANCE PREMIUMS.





THE CALCASIEU PARISH DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE HAS DECIDED NOT TO PURSUE CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST PARISH REGISTRAR OF VOTERS ANGIE QUIENALTY(KWIHN uhl tee). THE LOUISIANA LEGISLATIVE AUDITOR’S OFFICE FOUND THAT QUIENALTY CLAIMED TIME FOR HOURS SHE DIDN’T WORK, USED A PARISH-OWNED VEHICLE FOR PERSONAL BUSINESS AND HAD OFFICE STAFF RUN PERSONAL ERRANDS. DISTRICT ATTORNEY JOHN DEROSIER SAID IN A NEWS RELEASE THAT SEVERAL ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES AND OFFICE POLICIES WERE CHANGED TO FOLLOW THE RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR REGISTRAR OFFICE’S. QUIENALTY’S ATTORNEY, RON RICHARD, SAYS THE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST HER WERE INITIATED BY A DISGRUNTLED EMPLOYEE, BUT SHE HAS HANDLED IT IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER.

THE U-S-D-A’S NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS SERVICE CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF PLANTING INTENTIONS LAST MONTH AND, BASED ON IT, THEY EXPECT LOUISIANA’S COTTON AND SWEET POTATO ACREAGE THIS YEAR TO BE THE LOWEST ON RECORD. NATHAN CRISP, DIRECTOR OF THE LOUISIANA FIELD OFFICE, SAYS THAT MAY BE DUE TO THE HIGHER PRICE OF COMPETING CROPS. SWEET POTATO ACREAGE IN THE STATE IS EXPECTED TO TOTAL NINE THOUSAND ACRES, TEN PERCENT LOWER THAN LAST YEAR. RICE PLANTED ACREAGE IS PREDICTED TO INCREASE FOUR PERCENT FROM LAST YEAR, FOR A TOTAL OF 420 THOUSAND ACRES.
