THE ST. LANDRY PARISH SCHOOL BOARD LAST NIGHT APPROVED A PROPOSAL TO MOVE ALL STUDENTS ATTENDING CRESSWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN OPELOUSAS TO PARK VISTA ELEMENTARY NEXT YEAR. THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION INDICATED EARLIER THIS YEAR THAT THEY PLANNED TO CLOSE CRESSWELL BECAUSE OF ACADEMICALLY UNACCEPTABLE TEST SCORES FOR FOUR CONSECUTIVE YEARS. ACTING SUPERINTENDENT JOSEPH CASSIMERE SAYS CRESSWELL STUDENTS COULDN’T BE TRANSFERRED TO ANY OF THE OTHER OPELOUSAS SCHOOLS BECAUSE TEST SCORES AT THOSE SCHOOLS AREN’T HIGH ENOUGH. THE STATE BOARD OF ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION MUST APPROVE THE PROPOSED TRANSFER, WHICH THEY’LL TAKE UP AT NEXT MONTH’S MEETING.

A nonpartisan watchdog group says Gov. Bobby Jindal's tax code rewrite could cost the state as much as $650 million in lost revenue as currently proposed. The Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana says Jindal's plan appears to fall short of the claim that it is "revenue neutral." PAR says the plan relies on revenue figures from 2011, when the state was struggling with the recession. PAR says those figures appear to skew the data used to devise Jindal's plan.
