AT A MEETING IN JENNINGS YESTERDAY, GEORGE SWIFT SAYS HE BELIEVES THERE ARE OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW THE AGRICULTURE ECONOMY ESPECIALLY WITH THE IMPORTANT ROLE SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA HAS IN FEEDING THE REST OF THE WORLD. THE L-S-U AGCENTER SAYS THE TOTAL VALUE OF ECONOMIC COMMODITIES IN JEFF DAVIS PARISH EXCEEDS 140 MILLION DOLLARS, MAKING AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION THE LARGEST ECONOMIC GENERATOR IN THE PARISH. INFORMATION FROM THE JENNINGS MEETING AS WELL AS FROM SIMILAR MEETINGS IN FOUR OTHER SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA PARISHES WILL BE COMPILED INTO A REPORT AND PRESENTED TO AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER MIKE STRAIN.





AFTER A LENGTHY DISCUSSION, THE ST. LANDRY PARISH SCHOOL BOARD VOTED 8-TO-3 TO DELAY A VOTE ON A NEW SUPERINTENDENT UNTIL NEXT MONTH. JOSEPH CASSIMERE HAS SERVED AS ACTING SUPERINTENDENT SINCE OCTOBER OF 2011 WHEN MICHAEL NASSIF RESIGNED. THE FIVE CANDIDATES FOR SUPERINTENDENT ARE CASSIMERE, PORT BARRE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL WILLIAM DUPLECHAIN, THE DISTRICTíS CHILD WELFARE SUPERVISOR EDWARD BROWN, STEPHENSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL DANIEL RAWLS AND THE SUPERVISOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION IN LAFOURCHE PARISH CHARLES MICHEL. THE FIRST VOTE FOR SUPERINTENDENT WAS SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE IN SEPTEMBER, BUT HAS SINCE BEEN DELAYED AFTER TWO BOARD MEMBERS WERE CHARGED WITH TRYING TO SOLICIT BRIBES FROM CASSIMERE IN EXCHANGE FOR THEIR VOTES.





Deep-fried foods may be causing trouble in the Deep South. A study finds that people who consume a lot of fried foods and drinks like sweet tea and soda were 41 percent more likely to suffer a stroke than people who ate that way about once a month. Researchers say the study might help explain why blacks in the Southeast suffer more strokes. Blacks were five times more likely than whites to have the Southern dietary pattern.





A COALITION OF LAFAYETTE RELIGIOUS LEADERS WILL BE MAILING PETITIONS TO PRESIDENT BARAK OBAMA CALLING FOR STUDENT LED PRAYERS IN SCHOOLS. PASTOR CARLOS E. HARVIN OF NEW BEGINNINGS CHRISTIAN CHURCH SAYS THEY HAVE MORE THAN 250 SIGNATURES ON THE PETITIONS. THE PETITIONS STARTED AFTER THE SHOOTINGS AT AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN SANDY HOOK, CONNECTICUT. HARVIN SAYS THEY FEEL STUDENT-LED PRAYERS WOULD HELP IDENTIFY YOUTH LEADERS AND HELP CREATE POSITIVE PEER PRESSURE THAT WOULD EASE CONFLICTS IN SCHOOL.





A NUMBER OF BIG ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS ARE COMING TO CALCASIEU PARISH WHICH COULD LEAD TO PROBLEMS SUCH AS WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, TRANSPORTATION, AND HOUSING. AFTER SASOL ANNOUNCED IN DECEMBER A 21 BILLION DOLLAR EXPANSION OF THEIR WESTLAKE PLANT, THE SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA TASK FORCE FOR GROWTH AND OPPORTUNITY WAS FORMED. YESTERDAY THEY ANNOUNCED A STRATEGIC PLAN THAT INCLUDES FORMING A STEERING COMMITTEE MADE UP OF SEVERAL ORGANIZATIONS. PARISH ADMINISTRATOR BRYAN BEAM SAYS THE COMMITTEE WILL APPOINT TEN SUBCOMMITTEES THAT WILL DO THE NUTS AND BOLTS WORK.





A LONG TIME ACADIA PARISH PASTOR WILL BE REMEMBERED TOMORROW AT A MEMORIAL SERVICE. THE REVEREND JOHN HERSCHELL PATTERSON DIED ON JANUARY 8TH AT THE AGE OF 98. HE SERVED 27 YEARS AS THE PASTOR OF ELLIS CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE AND THEN WAS THE PRAYER PASTOR AT EBENEZER CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE UNTIL THE AGE OF 93 WHEN HE COULD NO LONGER CONTINUE. THE MEMORIAL SERVICE TAKES PLACE TOMORROW AFTERNOON AT TWO AT EBENEZER NAZARENE CHURCH.





A federal judge has agreed to cut short former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards' court supervision following his release from prison. Edwards was sentenced to three years of supervised release. His supervision lasted about 18 months before U.S. District Judge Brian Jackson agreed Wednesday to end it early. A reality television show about the 85-year-old Edwards and his third wife, 34-year-old Trina Scott Edwards, is scheduled to debut later this month on A&E.
