Let The Wind Blow

You are my friends if you keep on doing the things which I command you to do. I don’t call you servants any longer, for the servant doesn’t know what his Master is doing (working out). But I have called you my friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and I have appointed you, that you might go and bear fruit and keep on bearing, and that your fruit may remain.John 15:14-16

This scripture wasn’t new to me, being raised in church, I’d heard it many times over the the years and read it in my own study time also. But, one of the most exciting things to me about having a real & personal God is the way He can really bring something home to you and make His word alive, that jump off the page kind of thing! And this is what He did with these verses, in my life one very busy day.

Many of you being parents can relate to the thought of trying to get as much done as possible in those small windows of uninterrupted time. For me, it was nap time or before the kids were awake in the morning or when they were asleep for the night. Can you relate to a house that always needs to be cleaned and clothes that always need to be washed, dried, folded….etc. There were never enough hours in the day before kids, but after having them you gain a whole new perspective on time or a lack of it! Know what I mean??!!! We only had two toddler boys at this time. They are 19 months apart and all boy. Need I say more?

One fall day they were both napping at the same time, which was a miraculous in and of itself. I scurried outside to sweep the beautiful, fall leaves that had paved our driveway. A woman on a mission! Quickly, I began sweeping. After several minutes, I had a nice pile of leaves to show for my effort. “Wow! I may actually get this done and a few other things, too…” I was thinking. I reached over to get the dust pan and trash bags and started to tackle that pile when a gentle, but strong breeze blew by and in a split second all of my hard work was gone. Scattered!!! Everywhere!

Immediately I complained to the Lord. (I usually sing or talk to the Lord while I’m doing housework.) Here’s what the belly aching sounded like…”Lord, how unfair, I budgeted my time, worked diligently, even cheerfully and then without warning, it was all gone. It was all in vain!” I trailed off into a brief pause, when the Lord answered me, “This happened because you didn’t know which way the wind was blowing. You need to check the direction of the wind before you start and then work with the wind.” (We know from the Bible that the wind is a symbol or picture of the Holy Spirit.) He then continued,”The church is full of people who are serving and pouring out their hearts, all of their strength, yes, even their lives into things that will one day be swept away by the wind of my Spirit. And all as a result of not knowing what direction my Spirit was moving in.”

Wow! I was stunned at the powerful truth from John 15:14-16. Servant or friend? As children of God we desire to serve Him.

The Word of God gives us a basic job description. But the difference of just knowing what the rules are and having some one give you the inside moves, is the difference of exhaustion and exhilaration, joy and discouragement, of being a servant or a friend. It’s like throwing a ball and not having a target. God wants us to aim our service. We know where to aim, by the leading of His Spirit.

I’ve cooked a meal for someone to be kind and on the other hand, after hearing that little prompting, done so, and those are the times that it met a genuine need and was a personal message to the recipient of God’s care. And I've had the priviledge of being the friend who knew what the Master was doing. Don’t misunderstand; seeds of kindness always bring a harvest of good. But what I’m talking about is being on the inside track. If you had information on a stock, that was solid, you’d throw whatever you could there. If it was a sure thing. Right? You would be “wasting” your “ investment” to put it in something that was not sure. By the same token, our investment of energy and service has a sure return when we get the inside word. (That comes from The Holy Spirit)

God created us for Himself, for fellowship. Pay attention to those promptings, those thoughts to drop a card to someone, to give someone a call, to pray for that person that comes to your mind that you haven’t thought of in 5 years. The wind of God’s Spirit is blowing, listen, watch, and obey. He has called us to be His friends.
