Two St. Landry Parish Jail correctional officers have been fired and are under investigation for abusing a juvenile inmate. Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said Tuesday that evidence against the two officers is being forwarded to the district attorney's office for possible criminal indictments. In the meantime, Guidroz tells The Daily World the two officers have been fired. Guidroz said an internal investigation was launched immediately, and he had officials pull the videotapes from the jail's cameras from the time of the alleged incident.





THE HOUSTON-BASED OMEGA PROTEIN CORPORATION ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT THEY ARE SHUTTING DOWN THEIR PLANT IN CAMERON PARISH. COMPANY OFFICIALS SAID THAT THEY WILL BE CONSOLIDATING THEIR OPERATIONS AT THEIR PLANT IN ABBEVILLE. SPOKESMAN BEN LANDRY SAYS THEY WILL RETAIN ABOUT TWENTY PEOPLE AT THE CAMERON PARISH PLANT TO HANDLE THE TRANSITION AND CLOSING PROCESS, WHICH SHOULD TAKE BETWEEN 18 AND 24 MONTHS. PARISH ADMINISTRATOR TINA HORN SAYS THE CLOSURE IS A BIG BLOW TO THE PARISH AND ITS EMPLOYEES, ESPECIALLY AT CHRISTMAS TIME.





THERE HAVE BEEN ELEVEN ARMED ROBBERIES IN THE PAST WEEK IN LAFAYETTE. POLICE CHIEF JIM CRAFT SAYS HE BELIEVES 4 TO 5 OF THE ROBBERIES WERE COMMITTED BY THE SAME PERSON BECAUSE OF THE METHODS USED. HE SAYS POLICE OFFICERS HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO MONITOR CONVENIENCE STORE PARKING LOTS IN THEIR PATROL AREAS. ALSO CONVENIENCE STORE MANAGERS HAVE BEEN ASKED TO GO OVER PROPER PROTOCOLS WITH THEIR EMPLOYEES IF THEY BECOME VICTIMS OF A ROBBERY.





U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu has launched a TV ad touting her push to keep people from losing insurance policies because of the federal health care overhaul. The 30-second commercial, to run around the state, is the Democratic senator's first TV spot in her bid for re-election to a fourth term. In the ad, Landrieu takes credit for President Barack Obama's decision to allow insurance companies to renew individual health insurance plans that had been slated for cancellation under Obama's health law. Landrieu faces at least two Republican challengers in the 2014 election, including U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy.

TWO MEN WERE ARRESTED YESTERDAY FOR A STRING OF BURGLARIES IN THREE PARISHES. VERNON PARISH SHERIFF SAM CRAFT SAYS 26-YEAR-OLD DEVON HEBERT OF LAKE CHARLES AND 26-YEAR-OLD CODY ST. ANDRIE OF ELTON WERE ARRESTED FOR THE BURGLARY OF BUSINESSES IN VERNON, BEAUREGARD AND ALLEN PARISHES. THE BOND WAS SET AT 44 THOUSAND DOLLARS. CRAFT SAYS THE SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENTS IN EACH OF THE THREE PARISHES WERE INVOLVED IN THE INVESTIGATION.





LAFAYETTE PARISH SHERIFF MIKE NEUSTROM SAYS HE NEEDS MORE MONEY FROM THE PARISH’S SMALLER CITIES TO HELP DEFRAY THE COSTS OF DISPATCHERS AND JAIL BOOKINGS. LAST MONTH HIS REQUEST FOR AN ADDITIONAL 90 THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM CARENCRO WAS REJECTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL THERE. COUNCIL MEMBER L-J BOUDREAUX SAID IF NEUSTROM NEEDS MORE FUNDS, HE CAN GO TO THE VOTERS FOR AN INCREASE OF THE PROPERTY TAX MILLAGE. NEUSTROM SAYS THE COSTS TO PROVIDE DISPATCH AND JAIL SERVICES GOES WELL BEYOND WHAT THE CITIES ARE PAYING.





The numbers of Louisiana residents who were able to sign up for health insurance through the federally-run online marketplace is edging up, with nearly 2,200 people enrolled. That's after two months of open enrollment through the problem-plagued website. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released enrollment figures through the end of November. Meanwhile, applications seeking coverage for 32,300 people in the state have been filed.
