AT LEAST 25 PEOPLE TOOK PART IN A PROTEST AT GIRARD PARK IN LAFAYETTE OVER COMMON CORE STANDARDS THAT ARE BEING IMPLEMENTED IN SCHOOLS. IT WAS PART OF A NATIONWIDE COMMON CORE WALKOUT DAY. ONE OF THE PARENTS WHO PARTICIPATED, KIM BRETTS, TELLS THE ADVOCATE HER CHILDREN HAVE GROWN MORE FRUSTRATED WITH HOMEWORK AND STRUGGLE WITH THE NEW CONCEPTS TAUGHT IN THE CLASS. DEPUTY CHIEF MARK KRAUS SAYS THE STORE MANAGER AMARIK THIND AND THE CLERK DILRAIPAL SINGH CHASED THE SUSPECT MATTHEW TAYLOR SIMIEN AND BEGAN HITTING THEM. A FOURTH MAN, 19-YEAR-OLD QUINCY PAUL LANDRY, POINTED A GUN AT THE TWO, BUT THIND PICKED UP A LARGE WOODEN STICK AND STRUCK LANDRY, KNOCKING HIM UNCONSCIOUS. SIMIEN THAN PICKED UP LANDRY’S GUN, ACCORDING TO KRAUS, AND SHOT THIND.





OPELOUSAS POLICE ARRESTED THE FOURTH AND FINAL SUSPECT IN A SHOOTING THAT TOOK PLACE LAST WEDNESDAY. 20-YEAR-OLD CASEY RUBIN WAS BOOKED INTO THE OPELOUSAS JAIL YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED SECOND DEGREE MURDER. ALSO ARRESTED ON THE SAME CHARGE IS RUBIN’S BROTHER, 17-YEAR-OLD D’ANGILO RUBIN, 23-YEAR-OLD TYRONNE ROBERTS AND 18-YEAR-OLD YO’SHEMA TURNER. TURNER ALLEGEDLY DROVE THE VICTIM TO THE 800 BLOCK OF KIM DRIVE IN OPELOUSAS WHERE HE WAS APPROACHED BY THREE MEN AND SHOT.





Vance McAllister hasn't ever been to Washington. He'll make his first trip this week — as Louisiana's newest congressman. The Republican businessman was meeting Monday with his predecessor, Rodney Alexander, to start working out the details of his new job representing the 5th District after his surprise, 20-point election win over the weekend. McAllister plans to hire much of Alexander's staff, saying he needs to keep people who know the district and Congress.





A GROUP OF U-L LAFAYETTE STUDENTS ARE IN VIRGINIA TO WATCH A SMALL COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE, THAT THEY HELPED BUILD, BE LAUNCHED INTO SPACE. IT’S ONE OF ELEVEN SATELLITES SELECTED BY NASA AS PART OF A PROGRAM THEY BEGAN TO PROMOTE SATELLITE TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH. THIS WILL BE THE SECOND SATELLITE LAUNCHED BY THE UNIVERSITY SINCE THEY BEGAN THE CAJUN ADVANCED PICOSATELLITE EXPERIMENT PROGRAM TEN YEARS AGO. U-L LAFAYETTE STUDENT AND PROJECT MANAGER LOUIS COURVILLE TELLS THE ADVOCATE THAT ABOUT 40 MINUTES AFTER THE LAUNCH, TEAM MEMBERS WILL ATTEMPT TO ACTIVATE THE SATELLITE AND TRY TO RECORD THE FIRST AUDIO OFF OF IT.







A SULPHUR MAN, WHO TRIED TO TAKE A WOMAN’S PURSE BY FORCE ON FRIDAY, WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED ROBBERY AND BATTERY. ACCORDING TO A NEWS RELEASE BY THE CALCASIEU PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE, A WOMAN WAS SITTING IN HER PICKUP TRUCK WHEN 53-YEAR-OLD KEVIN D. TRAHAN CAME THROUGH THE OPEN WINDOW, GRABBED HER HAIR, AND DEMANDED HER PURSE WHILE CHOKING HER. THE WOMAN MANAGED TO PUT THE TRUCK IN DRIVE AND ACCELERATE THROUGH THE PARKING LOT, CAUSING TRAHAN TO FALL OFF. AN OFF DUTY DEPUTY WITNESSED THE ATTACK AND TOOK TRAHAN INTO CUSTODY.

Louisiana's Office of Motor Vehicles has started a pilot program that allows outside contractors to handle drivers' license renewals. The privatization program is being tested in Baton Rouge and Metairie. In each city, a public tag agent — a private business that processes vehicle title registrations — is also able to renew state drivers' licenses. State Police Col. Mike Edmonson, who oversees the state's motor vehicle offices, said Monday the program is designed to expand renewal options in cities with long OMV lines.
