A BESE COMMITTEE WILL CONSIDER THE APPLICATIONS NEXT TUESDAY AND IT WILL GO BEFORE THE FULL BOARD THE FOLLOWING DAY. THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION HAS RECOMMENDED THAT THE APPLICATIONS BE APPROVED. Louisiana's state agencies remain largely unaffected by the federal government shutdown, with road construction on track, food stamps delivered and other programs continuing despite the disruption in Washington. But as the stalemate stretches into its second week, uncertainty lingered Monday about whether agencies can continue to hold off the shutdown's impacts on federally-funded programs. For example, a nutrition program for women and children in low- to moderate-income families has funding through October. The state health department doesn't know what will happen for November if a deal isn't struck.

THE JURY HAS BEEN WORKING WITH THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE AND FISHERIES AND OTHER PARISHES THAT HAVE SIMILAR ORDINANCES. THE ORDINANCE WILL BE DISCUSSED AT TONIGHTíS MEETING WHICH BEGINS AT SIX.

VOTERS IN THE UNINCORPORATED PARTS OF ST. LANDRY PARISH WILL BE VOTING ON A TWO CENT SALES TAX IN THE OCTOBER 19TH ELECTION. THAT WOULD RAISE THE SALES TAX IN THOSE PARTS OF THE PARISH TO 9-POINT-5-5 PERCENT. IF APPROVED, THE TAX WOULD GENERATE SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS ANNUALLY FOR 15 YEARS AND WOULD PAY TO REPAIR AND OVERLAY EVERY PARISH ROAD IN THE PARISH, ACCORDING TO PARISH PRESIDENT BILL FONTENOT. PARISH COUNCIL MEMBER WAYNE ARDOIN TELLS THE ADVOCATE THAT HEíS NOT SURE HOW THE PROPOSAL WILL DO BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE DONíT WANT A TAX, WHILE OTHERS BELIEVE THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO FIX ROADS.

Gov. Bobby Jindalís administration is planning to privatize the stateís long-term care programs for the elderly and developmentally disabled. The Advocate reports that efforts are getting underway to change the way those Medicaid programs are handled. Companies interested in the work already are trying to line up providers to be part of their care networks. But Health and Hospitals Secretary Kathy Kliebert says no decisions have been made on the direction the privatization initiative would go.
