LAST NIGHT THE LAFAYETTE CITY PARISH COUNCIL VOTED 8-TO-1 FOR A NEW ORDINANCE THAT REQUIRES PARISH RESIDENTS TO SIGN UP FOR TRASH SERVICE AND TO MOVE THE TRASH RECEPTACLES AWAY FROM THE ROAD WITHIN 24 HOURS AFTER THE TRASH IS PICKED UP. THERE ARE AN ESTIMATED 12-HUNDRED RESIDENTS IN THE UNINCORPORATED PARTS OF THE PARISH WHO HAVE YET TO SIGN UP FOR TRASH SERVICE. UNDER THE NEW ORDINANCE, THEY WILL FACE FINES OF FIFTY DOLLARS PER WEEK, UP TO A MAXIMUM OF 200 DOLLARS. THE FINE FOR NOT PULLING TRASH CANS AWAY FROM THE ROAD AFTER THEY ARE EMPTIED IS 25 DOLLARS PER WEEK, CAPPED AT 100 DOLLARS.





A 60-YEAR-OLD LAKE CHARLES WOMAN, ACCUSED OF STEALING 551 THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM HER EMPLOYER, HAS PLED GUILTY TO A CHARGE OF WIRE FRAUD. CAROL A. THRASHER, WHO WORKED AS A MANAGER AT A WESTLAKE BUSINESS, HAD ACCESS TO THE COMPANY’S BANK ACCOUNT AND USED FUNDS FROM IT TO PAY OFF HER CREDIT CARD BALANCES OVER A FIVE YEAR PERIOD. THRASHER FACES UP TO TWENTY YEARS IN PRISON, RESTITUTION AND A 250 THOUSAND DOLLAR FINE. A SENTENCING DATE HAS NOT BEEN SET.





A TRAFFIC STOP IN CROWLEY MONDAY LED TO THE ARREST OF A MAN WANTED FOR A MURDER IN HOUSTON. CROWLEY POLICE CHIEF K-P GIBSON SAYS ONCE THE POLICE OFFICER DISCOVERED THAT THERE WAS A WARRANT OUT FOR THE ARREST OF THE DRIVER, 43-YEAR-OLD ADRIAN AGUILAR, HE USED GOOD JUDGEMENT AND WAITED FOR BACK UP BEFORE TAKING HIM INTO CUSTODY. THE WARRANT IDENTIFIED AGUILAR AS A SUSPECT IN A DECEMBER 2012 MURDER. AGUILAR’S LICENSE SHOWED HIM AS A RESIDENT FROM DOUGLASVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, BUT GIBSON SAYS HE’S BEEN STAYING IN THE CROWLEY JENNINGS AREA.





Opening day glitches were apparent as the online insurance marketplaces at the heart of the national health care overhaul opened. A spokesman for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana — one of four companies providing insurance through the exchange in Louisiana — said no one among about a dozen testers of the system was able to complete a transaction Tuesday morning. THE F-B-I FIELD OFFICES, INCLUDING THE ONE IN LAFAYETTE REMAINS OPEN, BUT PUBLIC AFFAIRS SPECIALIST MARY BETH ROMIG SAYS THE AGENTS ARE CURRENTLY NOT BEING PAID.





State wildlife and fisheries regulators say Louisiana's wildlife management areas and refuges will remain open during the federal government shutdown that affects similar federal properties. As deer and resident small game hunting seasons open this week, state officials say Louisiana hunters can access nearly 1.5 million acres of Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries-managed public hunting areas.

DURING THE VIGIL, HARRIS’ DAUGHTER, TALISHA, SAID SHE DOESN’T CARE WHAT THE MEDIA AND PEOPLE ARE SAYING BECAUSE HER FATHER TOUCHED THEIR LIVES. A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD NEXT THURSDAY, OCTOBER TENTH, AT TRUE LIGHT MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH IN LAKE CHARLES AND THE FUNERAL WILL TAKE PLACE THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY AT THE AGAPE LOVE CENTER IN NATCHITOCHES.
