LAFAYETTE CITY PARISH COUNCIL MEMBERS HAVE PROPOSED TWO MAJOR CHANGES TO JOEY DUREL’S PROPOSED 598 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET FOR THE UPCOMING FISCAL YEAR. DUREL PROPOSED A 2-POINT-5 PERCENT ACROSS-THE-BOARD PAY RAISE FOR ALL CITY PARISH EMPLOYEES, BUT COUNCILMAN KENNETH BOUDREAUX HAS ASKED THAT IT BE MOVED UP TO THREE PERCENT. ALSO THE COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER A PROPOSED BUDGET AMENDMENT THAT WOULD ALLOCATE 500 THOUSAND DOLLARS TO HIRE ADDITIONAL NURSES AND STAFF FOR THE LAFAYETTE PARISH PUBLIC HEALTH UNIT AT THE CLIFTON CHENIER CENTER. THE COUNCIL WILL MEET NEXT THURSDAY TO DISCUSS THE BUDGET AND FINAL ADOPTION IS SCHEDULED FOR THE FOLLOWING THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH.





THE UNITED WAY OF SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA BEGAN THIS YEAR’S FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN WITH A KICKOFF BREAKFAST HELD YESTERDAY MORNING AT THE CIVIC CENTER’S BUCANEER ROOM. THEY HAVE SET A GOAL OF FOUR MILLION DOLLARS. THAT MONEY WILL BE DISTRIBUTED TO 34 LOCAL AGENCIES THAT HELP AROUND 100 THOUSAND PEOPLE. THE CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN ROBERT GALINAS TELLS THE AMERICAN PRESS THAT THEY HAVE ALREADY COLLECTED 16-POINT-5 PERCENT OF THEIR GOAL, WHICH PUTS THEM AHEAD OF LAST YEAR’S PACE.





A WOMAN’S BODY WAS FOUND IN A TRAVEL TRAILER IN RAYNE THAT BURNED EARLY THURSDAY MORNING. BP PLC says the Jindal administration has misrepresented its record in the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, including how much it has spent on cleanup. BP spokesman Geoff Morrell responded Thursday to comments made a day earlier by Gov. Bobby Jindal and his top coastal official, Garret Graves, during and after a meeting of the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council. Jindal said BP has focused too much on its image and needs to turn its attention to covering restoration costs. Morrell said suggestions that BP has failed to address the clean-up of Louisiana's coastline is false and irresponsible.

U-L LAFAYETTE’S RESEARCH CENTER IN NEW IBERIA HAS BEEN CITED BY THE U-S-D-A AFTER THE DEATH OF A RHESUS MACAQUE, ANOTHER MONKEY SUFFERED A FRACTURED ARM, AND FIVE CAPUCHIN MONKEYS NEARLY ESCAPED. THE INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED BY THE RESEARCH CENTER AND CORRECTED IMMEDIATELEY BEFORE THE U-S-D-A’S AUGUST 6TH INSPECTION. DIRECTOR JOE SIMMONS SAYS HE DOES NOT BELIEVE THEY’LL BE FINED. MICHAEL BUDKIE OF THE GROUP STOP ANIMAL EXPLOITATION NOW HAS SENT A LETTER TO THE U-S-D-A ASKING THAT THE CENTER RECEIVE THE MAXIMUM TEN THOUSAND DOLLAR FINE FOR EACH INFRACTION.





A state law that allows state government to grab casino winnings from parents behind on their child support has brought in more than $1 million. The Advocate reports the state Department of Children and Family Services announced Thursday that it has collected $1.2 million from 969 noncustodial parents at casinos across Louisiana. The biggest single interception was over $23,000 from the Amelia Belle near Morgan City last year. A 2010 state law sponsored by then-state Sen. Nick Gautreaux, of Meaux, allowed those behind on their child support payments to be stripped of their casino winnings.
