CONSTRUCTION IS UNDERWAY FOR A NEW POLICE SUBSTATION AT THE CORNER OF MOSS AND MATHIEU STREETS IN LAFAYETTE. THE SUBSTATION, WHICH WILL BE THE HEADQUARTERS FOR 28 POLICE OFFICERS, SHOULD OPEN SOMETIME AFTER CHRISTMAS, ACCORDING TO CAPTAIN CORNELL MONTGOMERY. LAFAYETTE POLICE CHIEF JIM CRAFT SAYS THE SUBSTATION IS PART OF THEIR EFFORTS TO DECENTRALIZE THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND GET INTO AREAS WHERE THEY WORK. CITY PARISH COUNCILMAN KENNETH BOUDREAUX, WHO REPRESENTS THAT AREA, SAYS HE BELIEVES THE MERE PRESENCE OF A POLICE STATION WILL HELP REDUCE CRIME.





A CELEBRATION WAS HELD SATURDAY AT THE FAIRGROUNDS IN DERIDDER TO MARK THE ONE HUNDRED YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF BEAUREGARD PARISH. THERE WERE SPEECHES FROM GUEST SPEAKERS, BARBEQUE, AND MUSIC FROM AREA BANDS. BEAUREGARD PARISH BEGAN IN 1913, ONE OF THE LAST PARISHES TO BE ESTABLISHED IN THE STATE. IT IS NAMED AFTER GENERAL PIERRE G-T BEAUREGARD.





MANY WERE ON HAND YESTERDAY AT THE ACADIAN MEMORIAL IN ST. MARTINVILLE FOR THE WORLDWIDE DAY OF REMEMBRANCE. THE ANNUAL EVENT BEGAN IN 2003 WHEN QUEEN ELIZABETH FORMALLY APOLIGIZED FOR THE EVICTION OF THE ACADIANS FROM NOVA SCOTIA IN 2003. RALPH MELANCON IS A MEMBER OF THE ACADIAN MEMORIAL FOUNATIONíS BOARD. HE SAID THE WORLDWIDE DAY OF REMEMBRANCE IS AN OCCASION TO REMEMBER THE SUFFERING, HARDSHIP AND EXILE OF THE ACADIANS WHO WERE KICKED OUT OF THEIR HOMES IN 1775.

EARLIER THIS MONTH THE SULPHUR CITY COUNCIL RATIFIED A CONCEPTUAL OUTLINE OF A REVISED ZONING ORDINANCE THAT WAS PUT TOGETHER BY TWO CONSULTANTS. UNDER THE REVISION, THE CITY WOULD ESTABLISH A BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT RESPONSIBLE FOR VARIANCES AND SIMILAR ISSUES, AND THERE WOULD BE FOURTEEN INSTEAD OF EIGHT ZONING DISTRICTS. PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR JOHN BRUCE SAYS THERE WILL BE MANY REVIEWS FOR THE PUBLIC AND BUSINESSES TO SEE HOW THE NEW ORDINANCE WOULD AFFECT THEM, IF AT ALL. HE TELLS THE AMERICAN PRESS THAT THE REVISED ORDINANCE WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT HOW PROPERTY IS CURRENTLY USED AND WHAT THE CITY SEES AS A TREND TOWARD PLANNED GROWTH.





NEW IBERIA CITY OFFICIALS ARE ANTICIPATING THAT THEY WILL HAVE TO CUT TWO MILLION DOLLARS IN ORDER TO BALANCE NEXT YEARíS BUDGET AND THE MAYOR IS ASKING EACH DEPARTMENT HEAD TO LOOK FOR AREAS THAT CAN BE CUT. MAYOR HILDA CURRY SAYS ALL DEPARTMENTS WILL BE AFFECTED. MAYOR PRO TEM DAN DOERLE SAYS HE THINKS THE FINANCIAL PROBLEMS ARE A RESULT OF RISING OPERATIONAL COSTS AND REVENUES NOT KEEPING UP WITH THEM. HE EXPECTS THE DEPARTMENT THAT WILL BE MOST AFFECTED BY THE CUTS IS PARKS AND RECREATION.





Brian Hayes of New Iberia says he's always preferred hands-on jobs. So what if he has only one hand? He tells the Daily Iberian that he's worked at welding, laying asphalt, landscaping and operating heavy construction equipment. Still, the 26-year-old says every job is a challenge. He says he always has to figure out how to do things. Landry lost his left forearm when he was 4 years old. He's currently working at Pelican Aviation at Acadiana Regional Airport.





Lake Charles residents can expect to see a decline in giant salvinia on the Calcasieu River thanks to environmental factors and control efforts by the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Giant salvinia is an invasive weed that can create a thick mat on still water. Department officials say increased salinity levels are taking a toll on the plant's growth. They say a recent assessment revealed that most plants below the saltwater barrier are dead or dying.
