STATE EPIDEMIOLOGIST RAOUL RATARD SAYS THERE HAVE BEEN NO HUMAN CASES OF THE WEST NILE VIRUS SO FAR THIS YEAR, WHICH INDICATES THERE MAY BE FEWER CASES BY THE END OF THE YEAR. GLEN STOKES OF MOSQUITO CONTROL CONTRACTORS SAYS THEY FOUND A CASE OF WEST NILE IN A BIRD IN THE BRENTWOOD SUBDIVISION OF LAFAYETTE TWO WEEKS AGO. HE SAYS THEY DID SOME EXTRA SPRAYING IN THAT AREA AND THERE HAVE BEEN NO OTHER CASES SINCE THEN. STOKES SAYS THEY ARE BEING MORE PROACTIVE THIS YEAR BY SPRAYING EARLIER AND MORE OFTEN.





FELIX VAIL, WHO IS ACCUSED OF KILLING HIS WIFE, MARY HORTON VAIL, IN 1962, WAS INDICTED YESTERDAY BY A CALCASIEU PARISH GRAND JURY ON A CHARGE OF SECOND DEGREE MURDER. THE FIFTY-YEAR-OLD CASE BECAME ACTIVE AGAIN BY AN INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST FROM MISSISSIPPI. VAIL IS ALSO THE LAST PERSON TO HAVE SEEN HIS GIRLFRIEND, SHARON HENSLEY, WHO WENT MISSING IN 1974, AND ANOTHER WIFE, ANNETTE CRAVER VAIL, WHO DISAPPEARED IN 1984. AN AUGUST 14TH HEARING HAS BEEN SCHEDULED TO DETERMINE IF VAIL CAN AFFORD TO HIRE A DEFENSE ATTORNEY OR IF HE’LL REQUIRE THE SERVICES OF THE PUBLIC DEFENDER’S OFFICE.





A FORMER OPELOUSAS HOUSING AUTHORITY EMPLOYEE, WHOSE JOB IT WAS TO MAKE SURE THE AGENCY’S BIDS FROM CONTRACTORS CONFORMED TO FEDERAL AND STATE LAWS, HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH ONE COUNT OF CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT WIRE FRAUD. GARNETTE L. THOMAS IS ACCUSED OF GOING AROUND THE RULES TO BENEFIT ONE CONTRACTOR, WHO WAS REFERRED TO IN THE BILL OF INFORMATION FROM THE U-S ATTORNEY’S OFFICE AS K-A. ASSISTANT U-S ATTORNEY KELLY UEBINGER (EE-binger) SAYS THAT THOMAS CREATED FALSE BIDS TO GIVE THE APPEARANCE THAT THE RULES WERE BEING FOLLOWED. THE WIRE FRAUD CHARGE WAS BASED ON AN EMAIL K-A SENT TO THOMAS THAT CONTAINED BID SHEETS FOR A PROJECT.

CONSTRUCTION BEGAN THIS WEEK ON A NEW 21 MILLION DOLLAR HANGAR AT THE CHENNAULT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN LAKE CHARLES. THE HANGAR H PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY JUNE OF NEXT YEAR. THE HANGAR WILL BE 112 SQUARE FEET WITH SIX THOUSAND SQUARE FEET OF OFFICE SPACE AND WILL SUPPORT THE GROWTH OF AEROFRAME SERVICES AND NORTHROP GRUMMAN. THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO RESULT IN 500 PERMANENT JOBS.





AN AMELIA MAN LED A ST. MARY PARISH SHERIFF’S DEPUTY ON A HIGH SPEED CAR CHASE WHICH ENDED WHEN HE CRASHED HIS VEHICLE IN BAYOU VISTA. 31-YEAR-OLD JOVIAN JEROME CLARK WAS WANTED ON CHARGES OF KIDNAPPING AND BATTERY FOR A MARCH 26TH INCIDENT. CLARK HAD ALLEGEDLY HELD A WOMAN HOSTAGE IN HIS CAR AND THREATENED HER LIFE. HE IS BEING TREATED FOR INJURIES AT THE TECHE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER AND, WHEN HE IS RELEASED, HE’LL FACE NEW CHARGES RELATED TO THE HIGH SPEED CAR CHASE.





Louisiana's House Democrats are urging their colleagues to return to the Capitol for a veto session, to consider overriding Gov. Bobby Jindal's budget cuts.

Rep. John Bel Edwards, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, issued a statement Thursday saying the governor's line-item vetoes should be reversed.

Jindal's vetoes struck $6 million that would have paid for developmentally disabled services. Lawmakers have never held a veto session since the current state constitution was enacted four decades ago.
