LAST NIGHT THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED A SURVEY OF TEACHERS ON DISCIPLINE ISSUES. BOARD MEMBER GREG AWBREY PROPOSED THE SURVEY AT THEIR MAY FIRST MEETING. TEACHERS WILL BE MAILED THE SURVEY WHICH ASKS WHETHER THEY FEEL SAFE IN THE SCHOOLS AND IF DISCIPLINE ISSUES ARE HANDLED IN A TIMELY MANNER. THE LAFAYETTE PARISH RETIRED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION WILL MAIL AND COLLECT THE SURVEYS, WHICH WILL REMAIN ANONYMOUS.





MORE THAN 25-HUNDRED PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT AT THE LAKE CHARLES CIVIC CENTER THIS WEEKEND. KATIE MCCARTHY, THE COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, SAYS THE DAWN TO DUSK EVENT RAISES AWARENESS AND FUNDS TO FIGHT CANCER. THE ENTERTAINMENT BEGINS AT SIX TOMORROW NIGHT WITH OPENING CEREMONIES AT SEVEN. A CEREMONY OF HOPE WILL TAKE PLACE AT NINE P-M TO HONOR THE SURVIVORS OF CANCER AND TO REMEMBER LOVED ONES WHO DIED FROM CANCER.

The Senate Transportation Committee has backed a proposal to use Louisiana driver's licenses to comply with federal law requiring each state to create a national identification card for air travel, including domestic flights. Senators added that language into a bill by Rep. Johnny Guinn, seeking to reverse a state stance since 2008 rejecting the added security requirement. The proposal would allow for a driver's license to be stamped with a gold star if a person has produced documents, like a birth certificate, confirming who they are. Officials say if the state doesn't comply with the federal Real ID Act passed in 2005, residents will have to have a passport to fly starting in October.





MORE THAN A HUNDRED PEOPLE GATHERED IN LAFAYETTE YESTERDAY FOR A NINE-POINT-5 MILE BIKE RIDE OF SILENCE, TO HONOR BICYCLISTS WHO HAVE BEEN INJURED OR KILLED ON THE ROADWAYS. AMONG THOSE REMEMBERED WAS MICKEY SHUNICK, THE LAFAYETTE WOMAN WHO WAS KIDNAPPED WHILE RIDING HER BIKE AND MURDERED LAST YEAR. TONY BONOMOLO, A FRIEND OF MICKEY, TOLD THE DAILY ADVERTISER THAT HER DEATH BROUGHT CYCLING INTO THE FOREFRONT AND NOW PEOPLE TAKE NOTE OF A PERSON ON A BIKE, WHEN IN THE PAST THEY MAY HAVE JUST LOOKED THROUGH THEM. SINCE 2011, 131 BICYLISTS IN LAFAYETTE PARISH HAVE BEEN INJURED IN VEHICLE ACCIDENTS.





A PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT BETWEEN MOSS REGIONAL HOSPITAL AND LAKE CHARLES MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE MONTH. LAKE CHARLES MEMORIAL PRESIDENT LARRY GRAHAM SAYS, ONCE STATE LAWMAKERS SIGN OFF ON IT, INPATIENT CARE AT MOSS WILL BE TRANSFERRED TO LAKE CHARLES MEMORIAL. HE SAYS OUTPATIENT CARE WILL STILL BE HOUSED AT MOSS REGIONAL AND A NEW CLINIC WILL BE BUILT ON THEIR CAMPUS. HE SAYS PATIENTS WHO HAVE BEEN GOING TO MOSS WILL BENEFIT FROM THE AGREEMENT, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO GO INTO EFFECT ON JUNE 24TH.





LAST NIGHT THE ST. LANDRY PARISH COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY INTRODUCED A ONE-POINT-2 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET FOR THE PARISHWIDE COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY. ALTHOUGH THE PARISH GOVERNMENT OVERSEES THE OPERATIONS OF THE AGENCY, ITíS THE FIRST TIME THE BUDGET HAS BEEN PRESENTED TO THE COUNCIL FOR ADOPTION, ACCORDING TO PARISH PRESIDENT BILL FONTENOT. LAST YEAR, FONTENOT REMOVED AGENCY DIRECTOR DONALD ROBINSON AND ORDERED AN AUDIT BECAUSE OF FINANCIAL IRREGULARITIES. FONTENOT SAYS HEíS TRYING TO REORGANIZE THE FINANCIAL PROCEDURES AT THE AGENCY.





The state Department of Health and Hospitals has hired a new inspector general to review spending and fight fraud. The hiring of William Root, announced Wednesday, comes after Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration canceled a nearly $200 million Medicaid contract whose award is being investigated by state and federal officials. Root will not be involved in those investigations, according to DHH. Root will work as both inspector general and chief compliance officer at DHH, overseeing audit efforts, tracking the appropriateness of Medicaid spending and identifying potential fraud and abuse.
