Four people have been charged with gun and drug crimes after authorities say a 3-year-old child was found dead in New Iberia. The Advertiser says sheriff's deputies found the toddler at a home Friday around 6:30 a.m when they responded to a call about an unresponsive child. Deputies allegedly found illegal drugs, including marijuana, illegally possessed prescription medication and a sawed-off shotgun. Officials said four adults were in the residence along with two other children under the age of 6.





THE SULPHUR CITY COUNCIL HAS AUTHORIZED MAYOR CHRIS DUNCAN TO ASK THE LOUISIANA MUNICIPAL ASSOCIATION TO EVALUATE THE RETIREMENT SYSTEMS FOR THEIR EMPLOYEES, POLICE OFFICERS AND FIREFIGHTERS. DUNCAN SAYS HE HOPES THE EVALUATION WILL FIND A WAY FOR THE CITYíS CONTRIBUTION TO RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS TO STAY THE SAME RATHER THAN INCREASING EACH YEAR. HE SAYS THE CONTRIBUTION TO THE POLICE RETIREMENT SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE BY 45 PERCENT OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. MONEY FOR THE RETIREMENT SYSTEM CONTRIBUTIONS COMES FROM THE GENERAL FUND.





TOMORROW NIGHT THE LAFAYETTE CITY PARISH COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER WHETHER TO INTRODUCE AN ORDINANCE THAT WOULD AMEND THEIR CONTRACT WITH REDFLEX, THE COMPANY THAT OPERATES RED-LIGHT CAMERAS. UNDER THE CURRENT CONTRACT, THE CITY PARISH GOVERNMENT PAYS ALL THE LEGAL COSTS OF PURSUING OVERDUE FINES, AND, AS A RESULT, REDFLEX GETS NONE OF THE LATE FEES. UNDER THE PROPOSED ORDINANCE, REDFLEX WOULD PAY 40 PERCENT OF THE LEGAL COSTS AND GET 40 PERCENT OF THE LATE FEES. THE CITY PARISH COUNCIL HAS BEEN CONSIDERING GOING TO COURT TO COLLECT FINES OF AT LEAST 125 DOLLARS.





AFTER SOME QUICK THINKING, AN ABBEVILLE WOMAN WAS ABLE TO GET HER WOULD-BE KIDNAPPER ARRESTED.





A Louisiana appeals court has ruled prosecutors can use photos and other evidence taken from cameras and CDs found in the truck and home belonging to a Lake Charles gynecologist accused of video voyeurism. The American Press reports that the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal this week denied a writ by LaFuria seeking to have the evidence thrown out because of search warrant issues. LaFuria is charged with 186 counts of video voyeurism, 78 counts of sexual battery and five counts of molestation of a juvenile. Defense attorney Glen Vamvoras says he will appeal to the Louisiana Supreme Court.





THE PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION AT EDGAR MARTIN MIDDLE SCHOOL IN LAFAYETTE HAS HELPED IT BECOME ONE OF THE MOST SECURE SCHOOLS IN THE PARISH. THE P-T-O HAS RAISED THE FUNDS TO PAY FOR 25 NEW SECURITY CAMERAS AND FOR A SEX OFFENDER IDENTIFICATION CHECK SYSTEM. LASHONA DICKERSON, THE DISTRICTíS DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY, SAYS THIS SUMMER THEY WILL BE INSTALLING AT LEAST TEN NEW CAMERAS AT EACH MIDDLE SCHOOL. THE DISTRICTíS DIRECTOR OF RISK MANAGEMENT MONA BERNARD SAYS THEY WILL SOON BE ACTIVATING NEW SEX OFFENDER CHECK SYSTEMS AT EACH OF THE PARISHíS ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.





Lisa Nelson of St. Martinville has been named to the state Parks and Recreation Commission. The 18-member commission advises the office of state parks on recreation facilities, parks and programs. The appointment was made by Gov. Bobby Jindal.





Lake Charles police say residents of the city and neighboring communities can now sign up for text or email messages about traffic, wanted people, and other safety and community information. Deputy Chief Mark Kraus says people can sign up just for alerts affecting an area within a quarter-mile of their homes, and can decide which agencies they want to hear from. He says people can sign up at nixle.com or text "LCPD" to 88877. Kraus says people can also read notifications on Nixle's website.
