MORE THAN FIFTY COMMUNITY LEADERS AND SEVERAL LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL PRINCIPALS TURNED OUT FOR A MEETING AT NORTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL YESTERDAY TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR SUPERINTENDENT PAT COOPER’S TURNAROUND PLAN. COOPER HAS A WRITTEN PLAN DESIGNED TO PRODUCE AN A GRADE SYSTEM. ALSO YESTERDAY, THE GREATER LAFAYETTE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNOUNCED ITS SUPPORT FOR THE PLAN AS WELL. HOWEVER, SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER GREG AWBREY TOLD THE DAILY ADVERTISER THAT ANY ATTEMPTS TO PASS A TAX TO FINANCE THE PLAN WOULD NOT GET PAST THEM BECAUSE THEY CANNOT TRUST COOPER AND HIS ADMINISTRATION TO FOLLOW BOARD POLICIES AND THE LAW.





A LAKE CHARLES WOMAN PLED GUILTY TO MANSLAUGHTER YESTERDAY FOR KILLING HER HUSBAND IN DECEMBER OF 2011. 53-YEAR-OLD DARLENE SIAS ADMITTED IN COURT THAT SHE KILLED HER HUSBAND, 62-YEAR-OLD JOSEPH SIAS, WITH A CROWBAR, WHILE HE SLEPT. ON APRIL 17TH, JUDGE CLAYTON DAVIS WILL PRONOUNCE HER SENTENCE. SIAS FACES A MAXIMUM SENTENCE OF 40 YEARS IN PRISON, BUT THE PROSECUTION AND THE DEFENSE WILL PRESENT A JOINT RECOMMENDATION AS PART OF A PLEA DEAL.





SOUTH LOUISIANA COMMUNITY COLLEGE HAS DEVELOPED AN ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM TO OFFER TECHNICAL CERTIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS FOR CRITICALLY NEEDED WORKERS IN ACADIANA.





A new audit says the state-run Recovery School District has lost track of $2.7 million in property, like computers and equipment. The Louisiana Legislative Auditor's Office released the findings Monday, saying more than 1,600 items have been missing for four years. The audit says RSD schools haven't had proper accountability standards for monitoring the equipment. Patrick Dobard, superintendent of the Recovery School District, says the district is working to correct the inventory tracking.





LAFAYETTE AND BROUSSARD HAVE APPARENTLY REACHED A TENTATIVE DEAL TO END A LEGAL DISPUTE BETWEEN THE TWO CITIES. BROUSSARD FILED TWO LAWSUITS AGAINST LAFAYETTE OVER THE ANNEXATION OF PROPERTY ALONG AMBASSADOR CAFFERY SOUTH AND OVER AN 825 THOUSAND DOLLAR WATER BILL THAT THEY HAD TO PAY. LAFAYETTE, IN RESPONSE, HALTED SOME SERVICES FOR BROUSSARD SUCH AS ANIMAL CONTROL AND THREATENED OTHERS INCLUDING FIRE DISPATCH SERVICES. LAFAYETTE CITY PARISH PRESIDENT JOEY DUREL SAYS HE WILL NOT RELEASE DETAILS OF THE SETTLEMENT UNTIL IT HAS BEEN FORMALIZED.







LAKE CHARLES POLICE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR A THIRD SUSPECT IN A TRIPLE HOMOCIDE THAT OCCURRED AT MCMILLAN PARK LAST MONTH. ARMONTA HADNOT AND LON PORTER HAVE BEEN ARRESTED FOR SHOOTING THREE PEOPLE WHO WERE PLAYING A DICE GAME IN THE PARK. ONE OF THE VICTIM’S COUSINS, CRYSTAL BATISTE LEE, SAYS THE SHOOTING IS PROMPTING HER TO MOVE FORWARD WITH A “COMMUNITY TAKE BACK”, AND SHE HAS FIVE PASTORS FROM THE AREA ON BOARD. LEE TELLS K-P-L-C T-V THAT SHE BELIEVES THAT THE COMMUNITY IS READY TO TAKE A STAND AGAINST CRIME BASED ON THE OVERWHELMING TURNOUT AT A CANDLELIGHT VIGIL THAT WAS RECENTLY HELD IN HONOR OF THE SHOOTING VICTIMS.





A DUSON MAN WHO WAS ARRESTED BY EUNICE POLICE LAST WEDNESDAY FOR DOMESTIC BATTERY HAD HIS BOND SET YESTERDAY. POLICE RESPONDED TO A 9-1-1 CALL ABOUT A MAN STRANGLING A WOMAN IN THE 400 BLOCK OF MACARTHUR STREET. 31-YEAR-OLD MARCUS ROUGEAU WAS ARRESTED AND YESTERDAY APPEARED BEFORE JUDGE DONALD HEBERT, WHO SET HIS BAIL AT TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. ROUGEAU ALSO HAS AN OUTSTANDING WARRANT ON HIM BY THE ACADIA PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE FOR FELONY THEFT.





A trial over the deadly Deepwater Horizon disaster is scheduled to resume Tuesday with testimony expected from Halliburton employee Jesse Gagliano, who was on the rig at the time of the April 2010 explosion. Gagliano worked on the failed cement job that led to BP's well blowout. He was interviewed by a congressional committee and testified in 2010 before a government panel probing the disaster.





Gagliano invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination at his deposition in 2011, but he later agreed to testify at trial.
