SETH FONTENOT, THE 18-YEAR-OLD CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER IN THE SHOOTING DEATH OF AUSTIN RIVAULT AND THE ATTEMPTED FIRST DEGREE MURDERS OF TWO OTHER 15-YEAR-OLDS, IS NOW ELIGIBLE FOR BAIL.
TWO MEN WERE KILLED IN A SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT IN LAKE CHARLES YESTERDAY AND POLICE ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED. THE DRIVER OF THE CAR WENT THROUGH THE L-A 14 AND I-210 EAST EXIT INTERSECTION AND SLAMMED HEAD ON INTO A CONCRETE BARRIER. TWO OF THE OCCUPANTS WERE PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE WHILE A THIRD IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION. THE NORTHBOUND LANES OF L-A 14 WERE CLOSED FOR SEVERAL HOURS BECAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT.
THE IBERIA PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE MADE TWO ARRESTS FOR BOMB THREATS YESTERDAY. PETER COLLINS THE THIRD WAS ARRESTED FOR MAKING A BOMB THREAT OVER THE PHONE TO THE MCDONALD’S RESTAURANT ON MAIN STREET AT AROUND TWO YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. IN THE OTHER CASE, A 15-YEAR-OLD BOY WAS ARRESTED FOR CALLING IN A BOMB THREAT AT JEANERETTE HIGH SCHOOL ON WEDNESDAY. THE BOY, WHO WAS RELEASED TO HIS PARENTS, WAS A FORMER STUDENT AT THE SCHOOL.
Louisiana's state education superintendent has offered local school boards a new proposal to pay for the statewide voucher program. But the leader of the school boards association, which is suing the state over the issue, has rejected the proposed financing idea. A state district judge said Louisiana unconstitutionally paid for the voucher program through the public school funding formula. The Louisiana Supreme Court hears the case in March.
THE KEY FIGURE IN A BRIBERY SCANDAL AT THE 15TH JUDICIAL DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE WAS INDICTED BY A GRAND JURY. 64-YEAR-OLD ROBERT WILLIAMSON OF LAFAYETTE, A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR, IS ACCUSED OF MAKING THE BRIBES TO EMPLOYEES OF THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE AND THE ACADIANA OUTREACH CENTER TO HELP HIS CLIENTS WHO WERE FACING D-W-I CHARGES. WILLIAMSON FACES SEVERAL CHARGES INCLUDING SIX COUNTS OF BRIBERY AND HE COULD GET UP TO FIFTY YEARS IN PRISON AND A MILLION DOLLAR FINE IF CONVICTED. WILLIAMSON’S ATTORNEY J. MICHAEL SMALL, TOLD THE DAILY ADVERTISER THAT FIVE OTHER PEOPLE WHO REACHED PLEA DEALS BY IMPLICATING WILLIAMSON AND AGREEING TO TESTIFY AGAINST HIM.
TWO PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ARRESTED AFTER A GUN WAS FOUND IN A BACKPACK AT WASHINGTON-MARION HIGH SCHOOL. KIM MYERS WITH THE CALCASIEU PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS A 16-YEAR-OLD JUVENILE WHO HADN’T BEEN AT THE SCHOOL SINCE DECEMBER WAS CONFRONTED BY SCHOOL OFFICIALS AND THREW HIS BACKPACK AND A JACKET TO ANOTHER STUDENT, 17-YEAR-OLD SHAIQWAN MARSHALL. THE HANDGUN WAS FOUND AFTER A SEARCH OF THE BACKPACK. THE 16-YEAR-OLD ALONG WITH 17-YEAR-OLD RAY J. MURRAY, WHO WAS SEEN GIVING THE JUVENILE THE BACKPACK EARLIER IN THE DAY, WERE ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH POSSESSION OF A FIREARM ON SCHOOL PROPERTY, AND MARSHAL WAS CHARGED WITH OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE.
THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE HAS DETERMINED THAT THE SHOOTING DEATH OF A COUPLE IN NORTH LAFAYETTE WAS A MURDER SUICIDE. CAPTAIN KIP JUDICE SAYS THE EVIDENCE AT THE SCENE LED INVESTIGATOR’S TO BELIEVE THAT 52-YEAR-OLD JOSEPH BABINEAUX SHOT AND KILLED HIS WIFE, 52-YEAR-OLD JUDITH BABINEAUX, AND THEN TURNED THE GUN ON HIMSELF. A HANDGUN BELONGING TO JOSEPH WAS FOUND NEAR HIS BODY. THE SHOOTING OCCURRED WEDNESDAY AT THEIR HOME, LOCATED IN THE 100 BLOCK OF LEBESQUE ROAD.
Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Bernette J. Johnson — the state's first black chief justice — has taken her oath of office in a public ceremony in New Orleans.
Thursday's public ceremony on the steps of the Supreme Court building in the French Quarter follows a private swearing-in that took place on Feb. 1. Johnson succeeded Catherine "Kitty" Kimball as chief justice after Kimball retired from the court. Johnson assumed the post only after she and her colleagues resolved a dispute last year involving how her years of service should be calculated.
