A Port Barre woman faces charges she defrauded the state's Medicaid program. Louisiana Attorney General James "Buddy" Caldwell's office says 44-year-old Hilda Demouchet (dee moo SHAY) was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish jail on Tuesday. Demouchet, a personal care attendant, is accused of submitting false timesheets to her employer. She allegedly claimed she provided services to a Medicaid patient when that person actually was out of the state.





A RECENT AUDIT OF THE TOWN OF KINDER HAS DETERMINED THAT A REPEATED PROBLEM HAS BEEN CORRECTED. THE TOWN WAS CITED IN SEVERAL PREVIOUS AUDITS FOR AN INADEQUATE SEGREGATION OF DUTIES, A PROBLEM MOST MUNICIPALITIES HAVE BECAUSE OF A LACK OF OFFICE PERSONNEL. BUT C-P-A ROY SCIMEMI (shuh MAY mee) HAS CREDITED THE KINDER OFFICE STAFF FOR ELIMINATING THE PROBLEM. MAYOR ESTES LEDOUX SAYS ACCOUNTING PROCEDURES, SUCH AS COLLECTING MONEY AND MAKING THE DEPOSITS, HAVE BEEN DIVIDED AMONG STAFF MEMBERS SO THAT NO ONE PERSON IS HANDLING ALL OF THE TRANSACTIONS.

Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration is moving ahead with new regulations that spell out limits for the state's alternative fuel vehicle tax credit. The final rule governing the tax credit program is being published Thursday and will take effect this week. The alternative fuel vehicle tax break's cost has grown much larger than estimated and had become a headache for the Republican governor because of differing interpretations about eligibility. The new regulations will definitively eliminate "flex-fuel" cars and trucks - which can burn ethanol but also use gasoline - from qualifying for the credit.





Twenty-eight endangered whooping cranes now live in the wild in southwest Louisiana. The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says 14 youngsters brought to Gueydan (GAY-danh) on Nov. 29 were released Monday. They join 14 adults - two released in early 2011 and 12 released late last year in the White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area in Vermilion Parish. It's the general area where the last flock of Louisiana whooping cranes lived in the 1940s.





THE LAKE CHARLES CITY COUNCIL APPROVED A REQUEST BY THE SOUTHWEST DISTRICT LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO FOR A TRAIL RIDE AND PARADE WITH HORSES IN THE CITY LIMITS. THEY MUST ADHERE TO STRICT RULES WHICH INCLUDES NO ALCOHOL. COUNCILMAN DANA CARL JACKSON SAYS IF THERE IS A BIG MESS AFTER THE PARADE, THERE LIKELY WILL NOT BE A SECOND ONE. THE LONE COUNCILMAN TO VOTE AGAINST THE PARADE WAS MARSHALL SIMIEN WHO BELIEVES OTHER GROUPS WILL BE UPSET WITH THE COUNCIL FOR NOT ALLOWING THEIR TRAIL RIDE.





THE PRINCIPAL AT NORTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL IN LAFAYETTE, WHO WAS RECRUITED OUT OF RETIREMENT BY SUPERINTENDENT PAT COOPER TO HELP TURN AROUND THE SCHOOL, RESIGNED SUDDENLY YESTERDAY. COOPER SAYS HE DID RECEIVE A BRIEF LETTER OF RESIGNATION FROM MELINDA VOORHIES BUT HE HASNíT ACCEPTED IT YET AND HE WANTS TO TALK TO HER. HE SAYS VOORHIES LEFT THE CAMPUS SOMETIME YESTERDAY AND THEY HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO REACH HER AS OF 6:30 LAST NIGHT. BOARD MEMBER TEHMI CHAISSON SAYS HE HEARD FROM SOME STAFF MEMBERS AT THE SCHOOL THAT VOORHIES MAY HAVE RESIGNED AFTER THE CENTRAL OFFICE REJECTED HER REQUEST TO GIVE STUDENTS A HALF DAY OFF AFTER FINAL EXAMS.





Authorities say it could take up to three weeks to finish moving military propellant into storage at an explosives recycling company that caused the evacuation of a Louisiana town. The town of Doyline was evacuated earlier this month after authorities said they found 6 million pounds of the material improperly stored at Explo Systems Inc. Explo contracts with the military to demilitarize explosives and other materials. The company rents space at a National Guard base in north Louisiana.
