WHO Are You Wearing?

If you were walking the Red Carpet today and were stopped by the media and asked, "Who are you wearing?", what would your response be? People are intrigued by all the bling seen on the red carpet. The question is always asked - WHO are you wearing? The TV or movie star will give kudos to the designer. The designer made the dress, the shoes, the jewelry, but the star wearing the design presents it to the world. The design comes to life and takes shape when it is being displayed by someone who moves in it and flows in it.

Life is not a dress rehearsal and each day we choose what to "put on". Can’t decide what to wear? So many choices, so little time. Whatever your mood or the occasion, there is a clear choice. Our challenge is bigger than making a fashion statement with what we wear. The real question is - Who are we wearing? If we put on God’s love, the world will KNOW that we are His disciples. His love is one size and fits all. You can dress to the nines every day if you are outfitted in God’s love. Let's show the world some real bling!

Here's a story that God used to show me that we SEND a message by what/who we wear, whether we intend to or not. Chip and I were both Houston Astros fans before we were married. For years we went to Houston several times during baseball season to see them play. Live or via TV, we were there for the Astros. We bled orange and navy blue, brick red and black or whatever colors they were at the time. We were bona fide ‘Stros fans. Our boys could spout off stats for every player, knew all the jersey numbers and so on. We were and are a family in love with the Houston Astros.

The first year the Marlins came into being, we were scheduled to see them play the Astros in Houston. We had checked into the hotel and were pumped about seeing an expansion team play in their first year. Of course we were more excited about seeing the Astros. Chip had a “hot off the press” Marlins T-shirt on and the boys and I all had on our “tried and true” Astros jerseys. When we got downstairs, the bellhop said, “Oh boy, Astros fans and Marlins fans in the same family, it’s going to be a long night. You guys going to sit together?” He teased us on and on. We tried to convince him that Chip was actually an Astros fan. His response was disbelief, “How can an Astros fan wear a Marlins shirt? Everyone is going to think you are a Marlins fan. Why else would you wear a Marlins shirt?” We had fun with the whole irony of what he was saying. Chip Bailey is probably the biggest Astros fan I know personally. He used to sneak a radio under the covers after bedtime when he was a kid to listen to the games. He had a notebook of their stats. Four years ago he became a Astros Fan Blog writer for the Houston Chronicle online. We couldn’t convince the bellhop though. He made the call and came to his own conclusion by what Chip was wearing. What team do you represent? Who do you represent?

One of the last things Jesus said to the disciples during the Last Supper was that the world would know we are Christians by our LOVE for one another. In Colossians, the Word tells us what to take off and what to put on. We have a divine dress code. Colossians says above everything, put on love. Love is God's design, we display it to the world. It is our salt and our light. What we wear spiritually impacts and influences those we are in contact with. We can talk all day long about being followers of Christ, but what are we wearing? Our friends and family may know of our fierce, unwavering devotion to Christ, but the world will make its decision by what they see you wearing, spiritually.
Simply translated - how we behave, our responses, our actions are what we are wearing.

Today, let’s let the world know we are His disciples by our love for one another. Let’s take the message of God’s love off the page and bring it to life to others. Each of us is a living letter of God’s Word, His love in action. Did you get the memo? It’s found in His word, pasted below! Let shine today and make sure there is no mistaking WHO we are wearing!

Col 3:12--Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13-Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14-And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15-Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

I Thes 5:8 -But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

John13:34-A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35-By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
