A Life of Duty or a Life of Beauty

A Life of Duty or a Life of Beauty - October 27, 2009

Are you stuck in the duty of the Christian walk, without experiencing the BEAUTY of the relationship we have with Christ?

At times, when I take inventory of my life, I find that my walk with the Lord has been reduced to rule keeping. Who would intentionally live by the law & snub the amazing sacrifice Jesus made on the cross? Because of Him, we live by grace, through faith. (Eph 2:8-9) It’s the FLESH that tempts us to be law keepers, so we feel more righteous or better about ourselves. The Word tells us that all our righteousness is as filthy rags. (Is 64:6) Our "best" is not good enough. So by trying to keep the rules - we are trying to get it all right, but we get it all wrong.

We end up glorifying the flesh or trusting in what we can offer God by the work of our own hands. We go through the motions, but don't draw strength from our relationship with Christ. He is the vine, we are the branches. If we want to bear real fruit, we have to abide in Him. (John 15) A branch without connection to the root has no resource to draw from to bear fruit. Jesus summed up how we should live in Luke 10:27. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, your soul, your strength and your mind. Love your neighbor as yourself.” When we are connected to THE source of love, we find love and have the resources to love God and to love others. Anyone can go through the motions. Choose today to step out of the shadow of duty living into the substance of beauty living in Christ! Loving God and loving people!

Col 2:6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. 8See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

Col 2:20-Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, 21Do not handle [this], Do not taste [that], Do not even touch [them], 22Referring to things all of which perish with being used. To do this is to follow human precepts and doctrines. 23Such [practices] have indeed the outward appearance [that popularly passes] for wisdom, in promoting self-imposed rigor of devotion and delight in self-humiliation and severity of discipline of the body, but they are of no value in checking the indulgence of the flesh (the lower nature). [Instead, they do not honor God but serve only to indulge the flesh.]
